[JAWS-Users] Re: glad to be on the list

2007-02-18 Thread Christopher Hallsworth

Welcome to the list!
Answer 1: There is a free dictionary/thesaurus available from
http://wordweb.info
Answer 2: There is no need to integrate Nextup voices since they're
SAPI-compliant.
Hope that helps, and welcome again to this list!

Hi all. Ifigured I should take advantage of all jaws had to offer so

Well, I have a first question: does anyone know of any web or software
dictionaries that are screen reader compatible or are self-voicing?
Also, will thosenextup voices like kate or whatever ever be integrated
into jaws? Or at least work with it? I like thevoices a lot. It's
 either nextup or something...neovoices*deep sigh*
 Thanks

The NextUp voices have already been integrated into JAWS 8. Those voices
are actually ATT Natural Voices and I've had them on my PC for almost 3

[JAWS-Users] Re: glad to be on the list

2007-02-18 Thread Ricque

Actually, no new voices have been integrated into Jaws.
Version 8.0 of Jaws shipped on cd with the RealSpeak Solo voices on a
seperate cd.
Everyone should be clear on the fact that these voices are not a part of the
Eloquence synthesizer that ships with Jaws.
The voices available at Nextup.com, are Sappi compliant voices that will
work with Jaws.
Sappi is a different synthesizer altogether.
Now, it would be nice if the Eloquence synthesizer that Jaws uses, could
incorporate these newer voices, so we could have better speech output, with
the performance of Eloquence.
I don't have any idea how this would be done, but you would think in this
modern age of technology, it would be possible.

[JAWS-Users] Re: glad to be on the list

2007-02-18 Thread Dale Leavens

How is it so difficult to understand that is the compromise?

It takes a lot more code to be executed and a lot more memory to be accessed
to provide very high quality human sounding speech. This takes time and
computer processor cycles.

There is a reason why super sonic jet fighters are very small and not well
suited to hauling cargo. It might be possible to get similar performance out
of a wide body passenger jet with enough effort but the example of Concord
demonstrates people aren't willing to pay for it.

In this day and age for sure blind people are not willing to pay for that
level of performance, what I constantly hear is that blind people aren't
happy about paying for current levels of performance.

Sorry moderator if this is verging on the limits of list topic. It seems
though that we are unsure about what it is we require from our access
technology, access, versatility, speed, luxury or just what? Be careful what
you wish for. Our scanning and reading software hasn't brought us any real
advances in print reading for at least a decade. It does give us all sorts
of voices and dictionaries and buggy access to already available libraries
which many of us are refused access to but the actual reading capability
depends on other software providers like Abbey.

For my money I would prefer screen access technology which gives me reliable
screen access to all of the functions of my computer and so long as it is
intelligible I'll accept that until the primary functions are achieved. When
we no longer have queries about scripts to be able to use this or that, when
all Web sites are rendered intelligible, when Word or Access or Visual Basic
and other IDES work for us then is the time to worry about absolute language
perfection. Seamless and convenient access is where I prefer Freedom
Scientific to spend their development time and money on.

Good point my friend for sure. It would naturally take a lot more horse
power to operate a very human sounding voice as apposed to something that
was out 20 years ago. Thanks for stating it so clearly. We just make the
best of what is available to us and that's all we can do. That's why this

The JAWS implementation of Eloquence could be improved in minor ways, like
lengthening the punctuation pauses to make them sound more likea natural
reader. This would make it more comfortable for the user reading longer
documents. It would also make it possible for the user to increase the speech
rate a good deal more than at present, while maintaining speech comprehension.

If you're referring to responsiveness then I agree completely. Compared
 to
the voices computers were using back in 1989 when I first got started
Eloquence is a world apart. Thanks for your feed back and I've noticed
 you
have a new email address as well. Do you need me to remove the old address

How is it so difficult to understand that is the compromise?

It takes a lot more code to be executed and a lot more memory to be
 accessed
to provide very high quality human sounding speech. This takes time and
 computer processor cycles.

There is a reason why super sonic jet fighters are very small and not
 well
suited to hauling cargo. It might be possible to get similar performance
 out
of a wide body passenger jet with enough effort but the example of
 Concord
demonstrates people aren't willing to pay for it.

Be careful
 what
you wish for. Our scanning and reading software hasn't brought us any
 real
advances in print reading for at least a decade. It does give us all
 sorts
of voices and dictionaries and buggy access to already available
 libraries
which many of us are refused access to but the actual reading capability
depends on other software providers like Abbey.

For my money I would prefer screen access technology which gives me
 reliable
screen access to all of the functions of my computer and so long as it is
intelligible I'll accept that until the primary functions are achieved.
 When
we no longer have queries about scripts to be able to use this or that,
 when
all Web sites are rendered intelligible, when Word or Access or Visual
 Basic
and other IDES work for us then is the time to worry about absolute
 language
perfection. Seamless and convenient access is where I prefer Freedom
Scientific to spend their development time and money on.

Actually, no new voices have been integrated into Jaws.
Version 8.0 of Jaws shipped on cd with the RealSpeak Solo voices on a
 seperate cd.
Everyone should be clear on the fact that these voices are not a part of
 the
Eloquence synthesizer that ships with Jaws.
The voices available at Nextup.com, are Sappi compliant voices that will
 work with Jaws.
Sappi is a different synthesizer altogether.
Now, it would be nice if the Eloquence synthesizer that Jaws uses, could
incorporate these newer voices, so we could have better speech output,
 with
 the performance of Eloquence.
I don't have any idea how this would be done, but you would think in
 this
modern age of technology, it would be possible.

[JAWS-Users] Re: glad to be on the list

2007-02-18 Thread Chris

so if I download the nextup voices, how do I choose them instead of normal
elequence?
And word web I got that but can't figure out how to use it with jaws. I was
using jaws 7.whatever the upgraded jaws 7. How do you get jaws to read the
whole screen and all the dialogue boxes etc.? It looked like a good program
and I was really wanting it to be user friendly.
Peace,
Chris

 Welcome to the list!
Answer 1: There is a free dictionary/thesaurus available from
 http://wordweb.info
Answer 2: There is no need to integrate Nextup voices since they're
 SAPI-compliant.
Hope that helps, and welcome again to this list!

[JAWS-Users] Re: glad to be on the list

2007-02-18 Thread Chris

I found out about those voices viaUSA Games. Thomas the programmer uses
them and I really like their sound.
Now all I have to do is access them.
Are there people like me on the list who are yet not proficient in jjaws or
am I an anomoly? I don't mind being that, but don't want to burden you all.

One last question: do youknow what anti-virus software works well with jaws?
I was going to use avg free edition but my sister feels better if I pay for
something. Macafee? I heard of nod32 but don't knowhow well it works,
defeats worms trojans viruses...sounds like it'll kick spyware out of the
water. Does it do pop up blocking or spam killing? And is it's liscence
renewable? If it's not good what progs work well with Jaws?
Hey, have an awesome day!

[JAWS-Users] Re: glad to be on the list

2007-02-18 Thread Chris

so with jaws 8 you get those on cd? They never shipped mine...I updated via
the internet so never got the tutorial too. I'll give Freedom a call.
So if they're on a seperate cd how would I get them as defalt? And I won't
have to pay for them like I would at nextup's website?

I wish more technologies were compatible. Microsoft's Sappi voices are
kinda alright but att's sound so much morehuman!!! Though my
girlfirend was messing around and made jaws speak in foreign languages...and
wow he can sound so fluid and more expressive.
*smiles* He's kinda a dullard in American English. LOL
Thank you all for everything. I truly appreciate it.

Yes, more pauses in punctuation would improve things in long reading...I like
that suggestion. Elequence is fairly good at rising and lowering in sentences
but things like thatare what make it more rich. If I have to listen to my
computer most of every day, I want it to have some slight personality. But you
are right, usability should take the forefront.
