The problem, as you were told, is that the Outlook reading pane which
displays the message at the side of the message list is turned on by
default.
You can change the option Tom said, or more convenient in my opinion, turn

Latest version of jfw and Outlook 2013.

When I open Outlook, jaws says "unread) when standing on a specific message.
When I navigate away from the message, and return to it, jaws doesn't say
"unread"
