Do you know what these accessibility improvements are? I downloaded and
ran it today, and the bit I've always found problematic - the
downloading of updates - was the same as 1.5, as far as I could tell.

launching the Spybot installer, unload JAWS and start Narrator.
Complete the installation, then unload Narrator and restart JAWS.
