Hello my friend. It is useful if you aren't familiar with the programs
you're running, as well as if you aren't comfortable with your antivirus. I
have also had mine turned off for the last two operating systems, and have
had no difficulties. It's strictly a matter of comfort.

personally, I keep it turned on all the time. It's designed as a security
feature to stop programmes getting permission to make changes to sensitive
areas of the OS without the user knowing about it, without it, you run the
risk of something gaining access to important system files
.
