Re: [JAWS-Users] Touch cursors
There are archived Webinars on the freedom Scientific Web site, that go over using the touch cursor in JAWS to use Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, and it just allows you to press the arrow keys to simulate a flick or swipe in the direction of the arrow key. You do not need a touch screen for the touch cursor to work in JAWS. You need JAWS 16, I believe, or maybe 15, to have the touch cursor built into JAWS. You can use the touch cursor in apps, just like using a phone. For example, you can use the touch cursor to flick through the Windows 10 news universal app. David Moore Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: JM Casey Sent: Saturday, February 10, 2018 6:31 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Touch cursors Hey. Re: [JAWS-Users] Making the first sentence in a paragraph a header?
Hello Judy, If you actually mean a header then the following doesn't apply. I am thinking you likely mean that you want to make the first sentence of a paragraph a heading. The following applies in Word: You can select a sentence by pressing function key 8 three times. If using a mouse in Word you can hold down CTRL and do a single left click on a word to select the entire sentence. You can use a Word built-in heading style or one you have created. To use heading 1 style use Alt with CTRL and 1. This makes the selection a heading 1 style having a 16-point size of the Calibri Lite font and the font color is blue. If you use CTRL with Alt and 2 you get a heading 2 style, which is the same font and font color but the size is 13 point. Using CTRL with Alt and 3 will use a heading 3 style, which is the same font but size 12 point. If by chance you mean you want the first line of a paragraph to be a heading then just select the line by moving focus on to it and using shift key with down arrow to select it. You can then use shortcut keys for the appropriate heading. There are of course many styles to choose from but the first three levels of headings are quite often used in Word documents. If you actually mean you want to create a header where text goes above the document in the empty white space of the top margin then of course steps are different. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible free anti virus
When I used Avira, it kept throwing up abnoxious, mostly illegible windows onto the screen. I could not get much actual feedback about anything useful the program did. I understand that Microsoft was once not on the ball with anti-virus. In the old days, almost anything was better than their MSAV software. But now? Why go for a free anti-virus that's full of ads and other annoyances when you can use a free AV that's built into your operating system? I can hardly believe I'm for once not advocating the use of a third-party product, but there you go. Seems to me, if you want good third-party anti-virus, why not pay for it? Even there though, you're faced with some dicey propositions. Mcfee or whatever it's called from Network Associates is used by a lot of commercial and government groups. Guess what? It's crap. Count on it to save your butt and it will only start screaming at you after the damage has been done. I don't know much about it lately but I've heard horrible things about Norton/Symantec as well. [JAWS-Users] Touch cursors
Hello all- My computers are old and do not have touch screens. I keep hearing about the touch cursor. Is ther any use for them for machines that do not have a touch screen? Is there a link where I can learn more about using them with JAWS and which versions work with them? Windows Defender works well with JAWS, though you may need to use the touch cursor to review text that is not in focus. If you want a quick overview of the state of Windows Defender, start Microsoft Powershell and run the get-mpcomputerstatus command. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mr. Ed Sent: Saturday, February 10, 2018 12:07 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible free anti virus I have been using Windows Defender for a long time and it workds great. I installed Sophos on the computer, actually on several computers, and I perform the antivirus task from the website. Free version of MalwareBytes for anti-malware. Defender is already built into your Windows 10 and probably good enough for your purposes. It's less annoying than free AV out nowadays, which is always full of ads and hardly ever great from an accessibility standpoint. And it does detect a lot of stuff. Arguably, too much. Re: [JAWS-Users] My wayward Books Folder
I'm using Jaws 18. Jaws 18 and the companion software have been getting along beautifully until my computer was moved from one physical location to another. At the same time, all the items in Documents got mixed up, and are not in the same order that they were. That isn't a problem since I find things by pressing the key with the first letter of the item I'm looking for. But it can't be a coincidence that these changes happened after the computer traveled from Westbury to South Huntington.
