I installed win 7 on a new hard drive but there is no sound.
Where in win 7 can I find the volume control to see if
volume is perhaps muted?

In Windows 7, open the start menu, and type the word volume in the search
box
you should get a list of results which you can down arrow thru.
These results will vary from computer to computer, but try looking for
adjust system volume.

Not a USB one, because you'd have to configure the settings for that

is to bring up settings center and type ctrl shift d then in the search box
