Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible app for .dat files?

2018-02-25 Thread JM Casey
Not necessarily related to this current query, but I recommend you download
and install VLC player. It's ideal for all video formats out of the box,
non-intrusive, and fairly accessible (the preferences dialog and some other
issues exist in the default interface). It really works well though, and if
you set it up properly it will open these files by default. The program is
free, so no dangling or demands.

Steve and JM- A friend sent the file as an Outlook atatchment and it is
supposed to be video(s). I only have Cyberlink Power Media Player 14 on my
'open with' list as well as plain Power Media Player. cyberlink was asking
me to sign up- so it has never been used. I did not install either program
for that matter- so therefore assumed they were defaults. I do not have any
of the apps you mentioned, Steve. I'll need to ask the friend who sent the
file some questions...

You're right, there is no media player specifically bundled in Windows 10.

As I recall, when you set up Windows 10, you are given the choice of various
default programs. Microsoft suggests the Groove music player, but you can
choose any other media player including Windows Media Player.

The .dat file is a data file, as J.M. suggests, and is intended to be opened
by the program that created it. Many programs can open .dat files for their
own purposes; Windows stores .dat files in the Registry; CCleaner, Recuva,
Speccy are some system utilities that create .dat files; as do some
different games like Mindcraft, SimCity, etc.
WinMail, the native mail app in Windows 10 also creates .dat files and uses
them when a recipient's email doesn't support .rtf messages.
Finally, Video information on CD and DVD disks have .dat files.
Those are the main category associations, there are others that are created,
such as governmental forms generated through the Department of State that
I'm aware of.

Programs that open DAT files include:
  Windows File Viewer Plus
Microsoft Windows Mail
Microsoft Outlook 2016
Encryptomatic Message Viewer Lite
Traction WinMail Decoder Pro
Winmail.dat Reader

I have narrowed this down to appearing to be a ZoomText issue. If I close

Hi, George. I think you mean the Windows key rather than control in this
combination. I checked before posting, but in the process discovered
something. I turned on JAWS key identifier mode (I hope this is the right
term) with JAWS key-1 and pressed the combo you report here. Nothing
happened, and no description. Then I tried the JAWS key-Windows key-F4
combo. Instead of telling me what it does, the operation was performed,
i.e., JAWS unloaded and reloaded.

Matthew,
I have not followed this string but from what I see no one mentioned using
INS + CTRL + F4 to restart your JAWS. This assumes that JAWS is still

Just a tip, guys. You can hit alt-enter on any file, including a desktop
shortcut, to see and edit its properties, instead of going through the
context menu. Doesn't save a lot of time or anything, but it's handy to know
these things. There sure are a lot of windows keyboard commands.

We typically use the shortcut command Alt Control J.

If you can find Jaws listed as a program on your desktop or in your start
menu, then hit the applications key, and use your arrow keys until you find
properties. Hit enter on properties, and hopefully, you'll be at the
shortcut page. By tabbing through the list of options, you'll find a place
to enter that shortcut key. You may have to hit apply and ultimately ok,
but once the shortcut is saved, you then should be able to start Jaws with
that shortcut command if needed.

You can also set Jaws to start automatically when your computer boots, but
that may be going beyond what you are asking here.

2018-02-25 Thread Adrian Spratt
Hi, George. I think you mean the Windows key rather than control in this
combination. I checked before posting, but in the process discovered something.
I turned on JAWS key identifier mode (I hope this is the right term) with JAWS
key-1 and pressed the combo you report here. Nothing happened, and no
description. Then I tried the JAWS key-Windows key-F4 combo. Instead of telling
me what it does, the operation was performed, i.e., JAWS unloaded and reloaded.

You can move a book from the internal memory to the SD Card.

If you hit the 3 key quickly twice in a row, it will offer the option to
move the book to the card.
Confirm with the pound key as prompted.
