Hi Eric, Glad my laptop could be of help. Thanks to you and Carl and others for your speedy work in identifying and resolving this. For those of you who experienced the issue, it showed itself in a few different ways but for most, trying to read the JAWS UI, or JAWS generated lists like the system tray, links, and so on, would fail to read after installing the update. We were able to get a computer from a local customer that had the issue, was willing to work with us and lend us his computer so we could determine what was happening. As luck would have it, a list member many of you know, Nancy Feldman also had the problem on her laptop and she was in town attending a scripting class here at Freedom Scientific. Using her computer, the developers were able to verify the problem they discovered and confirm a solution. As it turned out, the problem involved a braille driver which has been modified to resolve something for Windows 8 support but could impact computers regardless of them using Braille. We are in the process now of getting the instructions written and tested, to send out to people this afternoon, who had experienced this issue. If you are one of those people that experienced the issue since the update posted yesterday, and you have not communicated yet with our support department, please do so now or drop me an email directly (send it to edam...@freedomscientific.com) and I will make sure we get in touch with you over the weekend, if not tonight. If you did not have the problem, you are OK to continue using the update. Early next week, we will repost a new JAWS 14 update with the change necessary and turn the auto update back on once that is complete. Again, thank you for your support with JAWS and all of our products. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused those of you who had the issue. Have a good weekend. [JAWS-Users] Using Google Apps
Recently, the State of Colorado converted all state agencies from whatever Email clients they were using to Google Mail. We will be using mail, calendar, Google docs and Google chat. Furthermore, they have not enabled Pop3 or IMap, so I cannot continue to use Outlook to access my mail. I am already finding Google much less efficient when handling Email and using my calendar. I have a lot of questions, but let me start with a few, and maybe that will help me learn what I need to know. Are there basic configuration changes I should make that will set up a friendlier environment for JAWS? Are there any scripts or other configuration files that will make Google Apps easier to use? Are there any good tutorials on using JAWS with the various Google apps? I need to be able to do more than just read an Email and reply. I am a very proficient Outlook user, and need to at least be able to spell check, set up folders (labels), write rules for them, easily read my calendar both to see my daily, weekly and monthly schedule and to set up meetings and schedule resources, and participate in Google Docs for Excel and Word files. I've heard over the years that Google Docs is not accessible with a screen reader. Recently, however, I've heard that this may no longer be true. What is the status of Google Docs accessibility? I've heard that Google Voice can be used in Chrome to make the Google apps more accessible. Does anyone know anything about this, and will I be able to use it while also running JAWS? Thanks for any information you can contribute. Nancy For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

I've tried both of those. You are right that sometimes it corrects the problems, but with a few stubborn files, it's still just gibberish. And in some cases, JAWS can't see the text at all, even though it's real text, not an image, and even though sighted readers see it just fine. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of ckrug...@sbcglobal.net Sent: Tuesday, October 25, 2011 4:03 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF Files try reading the document by using the left to right top to bottom or raw print stream settings. Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF Files
Hi Elf, I play numerous games, and often pick up indie games. In truth, most indie games are accessible, but when they're not, most publishers are willing to work with me to get copies in alternative formats. So, the primary offenders are: Just about everything from White Wolf. I'd love to read their books, new and old, but PDF conversions are absolutely, positively terrible. One example, Promethean, has a whole chapter that JAWS and other PDF interpreters (like the one on the Braille Sense) cannot see at all. Most books, like the Exalted series, jumble everything together, or don't read the text in a logical flow. Dresden Files: This is a small press game. They did some cool layout stuff, with numerous comments interspersed throughout the text that are meant to provide levity and insight, but which simply confuse JAWS and other PDF processes. Amaranthine: Another small press book. This author didn't respond, and the text is simply disorganized, with the thread of the text being lost at least once per page. Traveller: The tables are not presented logically, and Traveller has tons and tons of tables. Pathfinder: Mostly just text being presented out of order. Can you help with any of these? I believe in all cases Acrobat Reader says that these documents are untagged. I've been told that tagging is a time-consuming, tedious process. Because of all of these difficulties, I've concluded that I may need new strategies for dealing with PDF files. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? What are the optimal settings to use when opening a PDF file? Is there anything I can do to improve the conversion of PDF documents to text? I seem to recall that there's a place that we can Email PDF documents to, and it'll convert them. Is it any good? The problem with that approach is most of these documents are larger than 10 MB, which I believe exceeds the largest Email attachment I can send. I welcome all suggestions and insights. Failing that, I will contact the publishers and ask if I can get copies of the documents I've purchased in an alternate electronic format. It's just very frustrating to know that the information is there and available, but still inaccessible to me. Before I contact the publishers, though, I want to make certain that I'm not doing anything wrong. Many thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW 13 OCR
I agree. This is a potentially useful feature to me. Many people at work send me PDF documents directly from the Fax machine. I have no idea what's in the document. This convenient OCR should help me identify it. Also, Eric Damory's use of the OCR to read a DVD player screen has potential for me. I might be able to use this to click on things that JAWS couldn't see otherwise before. I'll have to try it. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of john melia Sent: Tuesday, September 13, 2011 3:52 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW 13 OCR where I work they always send me pdf documents that are a picture so it might be some use. - Original Message - From: Dujari, Prateek prateek.duj...@intel.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, September 13, 2011 5:35 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] JFW 13 OCR Well I feel the convenient OCr, as he called it, is not that cool really. First it purportedly just OCr's the stuff that fits on the window on the PC screen within the open Adobe PDF file and totally ignores the rest of the multi page Pdf file. Which means if I need to access the whole doc which is almost always the case with anyone, u still need to get another expensive PDF converter/OCR software. And honestly in my case at least, and I'd assume in most blind people's cases, we already know the topic of any PDF document we download with an intention and or need to access all of it. I'd challenge that most blind people don't just download a PDF file not knowing at all what the heck it contains. In al such cases the JFW 13 OCr feature doesn't make any diff really. Now of course the situation is quite diff if u take a pic of a print document u have no idea what it is using a camera and save then upload it to your PC as an image file and then use JFW 13's OCR feature. IN this case yes its valuable. IN summary this feature is of any value only and only if you have no clue what the soft PDF or image file contains. Especially when Errick read the DVD main menu with it. Think about it. If JFW 13 when it does work with Win 8 doesn't hook like NVDA and System Access do, it'll be So much easyer still to watch a DVD on your own. Pluss you'll be using WMP which is already easy to use some what as it is. This will only make it all the more easier. Assuming JAWS works with out hooking to the Video that is. See because since it does that WMP thinks JAWS wants to coppy the disk so that's why one gets that diolauge about not being able to run the analogue coppy protection thing. Re: [JAWS-Users] Transact SQL
Hi Ann Marie, Unfortunately, SQL will not be used on the mainframe. It's used in our enterprise environment, and I think it'll be accessed through SQL Server 2003. Oh, I love mainframe programming. COBOL, CICS, JCL, all of it; and the mainframe environment is very friendly. I'm afraid that SQL Server is less so. I'll be able to use the latest version of JAWS; I just don't know what to expect once I get there. I will likely learn SQL in any case, because it will enhance my career, and eventually we will move away from the mainframe. Have a great day. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Ann Marie Medlar Sent: Friday, April 22, 2011 3:50 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Transact SQL Hi Nancy, I programmed on mainframe for about 20 years. I also data mined and loaded key information into Oracle databases using native SQL. It has been many years but I believe I wrote SQL code in TS O and submitted it to execute. I remember that Oracle was the database and highly unfriendly so I used SQL to query information. The front end of this decision support system was written by consultants and I could navigate and create reports on PC with Jaws and Windows 98 but I needed to mine the data to load info so top management could make more informed decisions. Unsure what exactly Transact SQL is but do you know where your databases reside, mainframe, server. Does the mainframe talk to the server or is the mainframe being used as a big server? My company totally migrated to PeopleSoft; I don't think they use the mainframe anymore. I loved coding in Cobol, CICS, Adabas, Natural, DB2, jCL and the like. I don't know any PC languages but I know that it would make life more efficient if I learn to code to organize all my personal information. I learn a little and then I don't use it so I lose it. Learning SQL would enhance your career because SQL can be used on any database and on any platform. I still remember how to code in Cobol and JCL but I did not have many years using SQL. [JAWS-Users] Problem with a Date Field
Hi, I'm having a problem with a date field on the site I use to pay for my Amazon credit card. JAWS announces that the date field is read only. Amazon sets the date for your payment to the end of your billing cycle, but I want to pay it sooner, and I can't seem to find a way to make the change. Any thoughts on how to do this? Hello. win7, JFW11 and JFW12. I've 2 sounds/audio/playback devices on my PC. A sound card and another DAC that acts like a second sound card essentially. I've set the second card as the default playback device via the control panel route of the OS. When I've Jaws11 running it always defaults to this second card which makes sense given its my default playback device. However each time I run Jaws 12 instead, JAWS speech comes out using the first sound card which is not the default. Other sounds of the OS, any music I play- they all come out using the second card except JFW12 continues using the first one. so, is there any way to set JAWS to always default to the second card? Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 12 and compiling scripts for all in play
You need to make certain that all JAWS windows are closed, not just the one you brought up with Insert-F2. If you got that message, then the system thinks that another JAWS window is open beside that one. Close them all, then try Insert-F2 followed by S for script manager. Make sure you're on AllinPlay when you do this, so that you compile the right set of script files.
