Well, none of the offered methods have worked for me.
Another odd thing is that I don't see where to download the update on the
site. I thought I had it but nothing happened

I agree and it never worked for me as well and I had to close the program by
going to the windows task manager. But of course the update box appears

or any of that because of this darn New Version message which will not be
dismissed. ALT-F4 doesn't kill it, there isn't a close option
of Winamp
at startup and uncheck this box.
