Re: [JAWS-Users] starting jaws manually

2017-07-05 Thread Tom Fairhurst
Press Insert+J, arrow up to Help, and press Enter. Then arrow up to Startup
Wizard and press enter. You will find options for starting JAWS. You can
choose Never to have JAWS not start automatically. Control+Alt+J is a good
hot key, but you can use any hot key you like. Keep in mind that you must
set the hot key for the JAWS icon by using Windows properties. Also, if you
update your JAWS version or uninstall and reinstall for any reason, you must
set up the hot key again for the new icon.

2017-07-04 Thread Mike O'Brien
Hi

Our experiences are the same. When you install JAWS there is no hot key for
that version. So you have to edit the JAWS shortcut to add a hot key. What
I meant was that you cannot just edit the shortcut for the version of JAWS
you installed using a combination of keys that is assigned to another
shortcut. Although I haven't made that mistake for a long time, it used to
be that using the same key combination would mean that neither shortcut
would work.

Hi

As was stated below, you can control whether JAWS starts automatically with
the JAWS Startup wizard or in the JAWS basic settings. Control+alt+j is

Rather than assigning hot keys to start JAWS, I prefer using the run dialog

Hi Mack,

When you complete JAWS installation, after the Activation dialog, it opens
the JAWS Startup Wizard. Amon other initial settings, you can specify wetter
or not JAWS starts automatically on Logon screen and/or after you log in, as
well as if JAWS will be displayed as a window on the taskbar (the window
have a menu bar for accessing various settings and utilities) or as an icon
in the system tray (right side near the clock at the bottom of the screen);
in that last case, items of the menu bar are shown as sub menus on a context
menu. To quickly access that set of options and utilities, regardless the
way in which displaying of JAWS program window is configured, press
INSERT+J.
If you dismissed the Startup Wizard or you accidentally configured something
in a wrong way, despite the fact that those options and more are available
in various JAWS dialogs and utilities like the Basics dialog or the Settings
Center, you can reopen this wizard by going to the Help menu or sub menu
(ALT+H) and then pressing Z to quickly go to Startup Wizard.
If you want to configure automatic starting without following the wizard, go
to the Options menu or sub menu and then to Basics. In this dialog, tab to
the Launch JAWS at Startup button and press SPACEBAR to open a second dialog
box in which you can configure automatic starting up on both stages as you
wish. Note that setting up launching on the Logon screen or for all users
require administrative privileges; therefore, if your user account is a
standard one, you'll only see the combo box to specify if JAWS will start
automatically on that account.
If you have Windows Vista or newer, you can also control these settings
through the Windows Ease of Access Center that brings up by pressing
WINDOWS+U, specifically through the Use the Computer without a Display
WINDOWS+link
for the current user, and the one that says Change Administrative Settings
for setting up the behavior in the Logon screen.

Unlike other screen readers, although JAWS automatically adds a Desktop
shortcut, that shortcut does not include a keyboard shortcut by default. To
add it one, find the shortcut in your Desktop, press ALT+ENTER to open the
shortcut's properties dialog, tab to the Shortcut Key hot key edit, press
the hotkey you want, tab to the OK button and activate it with SPACEBAR.

Hope it helps!

Morning,
I use JAWS 18, Jaws Fusion and NVDA. I have created desktop shortcuts for
each of these and given them names proceeded by a number, for example 2 JAWS
and 3 Fusion. This makes their startup key easy to find, press 2 JAWS and
enter and I am up and running. Happy to post the process if anyone is
interested. As your WindowEyes is still an option, it could be included as a
shortcut as well. Just remember that you can't run two screen readers at the
same time. That creates the Tower of Babble effect!

In the JAWS set up wizard you can access jaws from the system tray

Use whatever hot key combo that you will remember and have not used before.

I use alt/control J for the current one and another letter for a prior one
(I always keep the current version and the prior one).

the caps lock and insert keys are what will be refred to as the jaws keys. and

Two parts to your question.

If I'm not mistaken, the JAWS installation process gives you the option of
loading or not loading JAWS at startup. If it doesn't, maybe you could post
again. The checkbox is in the JAWS options dialog, but how you get there
depends on whether JAWS is or isn't in your system tray.

Yes, control-alt-j is a good hotkey to open JAWS manually. However, you'll need
to set it yourself. Once again, please post if instructions would help.

Hi Mac,

After you install Jaws you will get a multi page dialog called, Start-up

Control, Alt, + J, keystroke is the default hotkey / shortcut for starting
Jaws, unless its changed, & I haven't heard of the change. When installing
Jaws a shortcut icon will be placed on the desktop, so pressing enter on
this icon will start Jaws as well.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] starting jaws manually

i'm finally going to install jaws before f s o takes away my window eyes
migration deal. however, i don't want jaws to load at startup, i just
want to use it manually. when i first install jaws, i will set windows
to not load at the log in screen or at windows startup, because i know
jaws will load automatically, where do i go to stop jaws from loading at
startup, is ctrl alt j a good hot key to use to start jaws manually?

In the JAWS set up wizard you can access jaws from the system tray
(ins/f11), too.

Use whatever hot key combo that you will remember and have not used before.

I use alt/control J for the current one and another letter for a prior
one (I always keep the current version and the prior one).
