the app is installed, which is true, I have installed it BUT it has not

No, you don't need to root your Nexus for this.
You do need to enable installing from sources other than Google Play:
You can do this by going to Settings -> Security then toggling 'Unknown
sources'.
Once you've installed it you should re-enable it to keep your device
secure.
