Without GTK_USE_PORTAL=1 it looks like it's a bug in Firefox/Thunderbird,

I stand corrected. There was still some script setting the environment variable
at KDE login. I reverted back to regular Firefox and things work again.
Thunderbird seems to behave properly again as well.
