I gave it a try in a Xubuntu VM and it's just like I expected. The problem was
fixed but only in a later version than is shipped in 20.04. The change is small
however so I can try to get it into 20.04 as well

That's odd. Can you pinpoint what circumstances seem to cause it to stop
