[releaseme] [Bug 465897] New: Potential problem in passing AppData translations to appstream-data
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=465897 Bug ID: 465897 Summary: Potential problem in passing AppData translations to appstream-data Classification: Developer tools Product: releaseme Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS: Linux Status: REPORTED Severity: normal Priority: NOR Component: general Assignee: unassigned-b...@kde.org Reporter: tyson...@tysontan.com CC: sit...@kde.org Target Milestone: --- First of all, this isn't an issue where AppData files haven't been translated. They have been translated for years, but never seemed to have made it into places like Discover and Gnome Software. # I've tested with: 1) Latest versions of ArchLinux and Ubuntu; 2) Simplified Chinese locale; 3) Discover and Gnome Software; For example, in this environment, applications like Krita, digiKam, Kdenlive do not show up in Discover with Chinese descriptions. But they have been 100% translated by me since 2018, and their AppData translations are properly displayed on https://apps.kde.org/ https://apps.kde.org/zh-cn/krita/ https://apps.kde.org/zh-cn/digikam/ https://apps.kde.org/zh-cn/kdenlive/ I don't think this is likely to be a bug in Discover, or mis-packaging of appstream-data, because some KDE applications do have Chinese AppData translations, but they are very old. Most of their data came from a time before 2018. Other less active languages like Japanese also seem to have the same problem. Both ArchLinux and Ubuntu have the same problem. It seems as if the AppData translations have stopped being passed to places like appstream-data, sometime before 2018. # I must admit that I do not really know how things works for appstream, but in this article: https://blogs.gnome.org/uraeus/2022/06/10/how-to-get-your-application-to-show-up-in-gnome-software/ There is a paragraph: "An optional gettext or QT translation domain which allows the AppStream generator to collect statistics on shipped application translations." I wonder, is it possible for this thing to be mis-configured? This issue has been plaguing us for years now, affecting the discoverability of apps in non-English languages. I have exhausted any lead at this point. Help would be greatly appreciated. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

The situation is largely the same, but with a small bit of difference. The screenshots can be viewed in Comment 11 and Comment 12 . digiKam in this case has one line translated, which is the "content" string from the desktop entry: digikam._desktop_.pot #: core/app/main/org.kde.digikam.desktop:120 EN: Manage your photographs like a professional with the power of open source CN: 自由开源的专业照片管理程序 The translation of this line is up to date, which was translated by me around 2021. [Discover] [Bug 465897] Potential problem in passing AppData translations to appstream-data
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=465897 --- Comment #16 from Tyson Tan --- Now in Comment 14 and Comment 15 you can see how Deepin File Manager and Audacious are both missing translations. The similarity of them being they all use Qt. Audacious used to be a GTK2 application. It was later ported to Qt5. I clearly remember it had full translations in Gnome Software back when I was using Gnome. But now it has none on Arch (!), one line on Fedora (!). Deepin is a native Chinese project, so they have always been fully translating their stuff since the very beginning, but they use using a very old version of Qt, which could be the reason for why they still have 1 line translated. Could this actually be a bug/misconfiguration to how Qt handles AppData translation/its marking of the translations? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
[Discover] [Bug 465897] Potential problem in passing AppData translations to appstream-data
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=465897 --- Comment #17 from Tyson Tan --- I've tested more. Under Japanese locale, the situation is similar to Comment 16. Under French and Spanish locale, Audacious is missing translations while digiKam has everything. I'm pretty sure these 2 applications are popular enough to have everything always fully translated at all times. But something is preventing them from showing up. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

But the touchpad event is now all messed up. 1) Krita can only receive Left Button click from the touchpad. It ignores the touchpad's right click events completely (either by clicking on the touchpad's buttom-right corner / or using the 2-finger tapping gesture). These right-clicks works as intended outside of Krita. "Use mouse event for right click" didn't help. 2) Left click on canvas sometimes initiates brush strokes, and the stroke continues to draw even when the left button is released. I must do another left click to end the stroke. 3) Mouse cursor on canvas is still missing after the S-Pen is in range and then removed from range. The trackpad's "Right Click" does not produce a Right-Mouse-Button event. It produces an "Opens Contextual Menu" signal instead. Krita doesn't seem to recognize that signal. A Bluetooth mouse can produce a proper Right-Mouse-Button event on Galaxy Tab S8. But if in System Settings, the Secondary button is set to None (default is Open Contextual Menu), then RMB is lost. Krita recognizes RMB event in its configuration dialogue. However, it doesn't recognize RMB on its canvas. On Krita's canvas, the first click from a touchpad/mouse is always recognized as "start of a brush stroke", and the second click recognized as "ending of a brush stroke", regardless of Left/Right button. Notes: Galaxy Tab S8 has been updated to the latest One UI 5.1. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=463115 --- Comment #22 from Tyson Tan --- Anyway, I suppose the original bug in this report has been fixed in your latest APK. Maybe we should just mark this bug as fixed, and call it a day? I guess the issues I mentioned in Comment 18 and Comment 21 were not caused by your code. Perhaps, they have always been there, I just never paid attention. Krita not being able to recognize RMB on its canvas is a serious bug, nonetheless. Especially when we routinely recommend users to use Krita with a keyboard. It seems every Android tablet device invents a different way to deal with RMB/Context Menu events, making it troublesome to support each device properly. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

However, I have no idea how to find the log files on Android. There is a new finding: when the bug happened, I left mouse clicked on the canvas, the cursor returned and it was functional. This felt similar to another bug I reported earlier (after creating/opening a document, the canvas would freeze until I draw something on it) BTW, this bug has become less relevant to my Krita usage, as I figured out that the most comfortable way to use Krita on an Android tablet -- to ditch the keyboard and mouse completely, and to use the screen vertically, with no docker shown. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[krita] [Bug 472381] Simplified Chinese (zh_CN) translation of docs.krita.org is broken
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=472381 Tyson Tan changed: What|Removed |Added Status|REOPENED|RESOLVED Resolution|--- |FIXED --- Comment #6 from Tyson Tan --- It seemed to have fixed itself now. I thought it was out of sync, because after updating the translation SVN, I didn't see dev.krita.org using the new translations for days. Do we usually need a few days before dev.krita.org loads the new translations? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
