Hmm... empirically, I seem to have discovered a factor related to why
this sometimes works and sometimes does not with 4.13 - for me, the bug
only occurs if my laptop is booted *without* AC power applied.
Which makes no sense. But seems to be happening anyway.

FYI, I also had suspend issues (Aspire E5-575G-53WP), after suspend (not
sure if it was proper suspend) I could log in but system was only semi
responsive, restart hanged, had to hard boot with power button. The
mailine kernel fixed that (suspend issue and restart hanging) but
introduced a
Bluetooth audio and profile selection is actually the job of pulseaudio,
not bluez (surprisingly).
Also, A2DP has always been preferred over HSP/HFP but the availability
and detection of A2DP has been historically buggy. So the selection
might not turn out as you hope. AFAIK fixes for this
