Yes I think this is some kind of failure to install the Nvidia driver
correctly, such that the Xorg config was missing. It should work
perfectly if installed from the official Ubuntu .deb files or via the

Sounds like this might be a kernel bug, or a hardware problem. I am
skeptical of CSR Bluetooth dongles since they seem to be consistently
unreliable, at least on Linux.
Please try a newer (or older) kernel version and tell us if that makes

Yeah it's possible there is no Nvidia GPU, although comment #10 also
suggests there is one. Just seems the more likely explanation right now.

It sounds like a hardware fault. I'm not sure what else to recommend
other than:
* Don't ever plug the drive in; or
* Get a new drive; or
* Get a new motherboard; or
* Try a newer or older kernel version and see if there are any that
