This time the laptop was NOT after the sleep state. The issue occurred afer a
few minutes of the idle state so as the display was automatically shut down,

16.04.1 LTS via the Software updater made ~ 3rd of Jan, 2017, which has

Ubuntu 16.04, RF mouse and keyboard did not work if plugged via the USB
