KR> Fw: Object lesson - God's Grace

2010-10-23 Thread John Martindale
Yes, it was a shocker and I apologise for having a bad day down here and to
everyone, especially Mark L for violating the etiquette. I will endeavor to
restrain myself more in future.

However, over the years I have been on this site have seen increasing
amounts of this sort of thing. In my view there is no place for religious
zealotry on this site. It would be easy for many of us to espouse our views
in this respect and clog up the system for good..but we don't.

Similarly I think it is inappropriate to introduce un-researched idealistic
design changes that have dangerous implications for any who may choose to
copy. There are numerous implications of drop tanks on stall, centre of
gravity, spar loading, side slip uncovering ports, venting, ground
clearance, drag and air flow over the flaps, ailerons and tail. I suspect
most of us are insufficiently qualified to even begin thinking about these
matters. There are many KRs flying and none need such tanks as far as I
know. So Craig, if you're going to do it please get expert advice and when
you have it come back and talk from a more learned base. I think you'll find
most will advise against it.

Folks, please talk about KR construction and not God or drop tanks on Sea
Furys..in other words stick to what is real and achievable.

I would also like to thank those of you who have privately indicated support
for what I said.

God's Grace

What is mentioned here appears to be a
shame, but the message is very true. I hope you are all blessed by this
story. I wonder how many people will delete this without reading it because
of the title.

There once was a man named George Thomas, a
pastor in a small New England town. One Easter Sunday morning, he came to
the Church carrying a rusty, bent, old bird cage and set it by the pulpit.
Eyebrows were raised and as if in response, Pastor Thomas began to speak . .
.

"I was walking through town yesterday when I
saw a young boy coming toward me swinging this bird cage. On the bottom of
the cage were three little wild birds, shivering with cold and fright.

I stopped the lad and asked, "What do you
have there, son?"

"Just some old birds," came the reply.

"What are you going to do with them?" I
asked.

"Take 'em home and have fun with 'em," he
answered. "I'm gonna tease 'em and pull out their feathers to make 'em
fight. I'm gonna have a real good time."

"But you'll get tired of those birds sooner
or later. What will you do then?"

"Oh, I've got some cats," said the little
boy. "They like birds. I'll take 'em to them."

The pastor was silent for a moment. "How
much do you want for those birds, son?"

"Huh?! Why, you don't want them birds,
mister. They're just plain old field birds. They don't sing. They ain't even
pretty!"

"How much?" the pastor asked again.

The boy sized up the pastor as if he were
crazy and said,"Ten dollars?"

The pastor reached in his pocket and took
out a ten dollar bill. He placed it in the boy's hand. In a flash, the boy
was gone. The pastor picked up the cage and gently carried it to the end of
the alley where there was a tree and a grassy spot. Setting the cage down,
he opened the door, and by softly tapping the bars, persuaded the birds out,
setting them free.

I can't speak for everybody else, but I can tell you why I don't do what I
think you probably mean to say, which is "tuned headers". I spent a really
inordinate amount of time building a set of 321 stainless headers, put $400
in material alone, and it took me almost forever to do it. Stainless is
tough stuff! Mild steel would have been easier (and apparently lasts just
about as long), but even so, all those bends and extra welds would have
tripled the effort. Andthere's simply not enough room. The simple
straight exhaust I made is just absolutely all that will fit under my engine
cowling, and anything more would have cost another couple of inches, not to
mention a few more pounds, megabucks more in material, and triple the time.
And five percent more power only buys you a very few miles per hour for the
effort. Attention paid to aerodynamic details would likely pay far more
dividends (not that I've taken advantage of those either!).

I hope y'all understand why I "slack" much of the time, and there's often a
pretty good reason...

KR> Exhaust headres

2010-10-23 Thread mbz...@comcast.net
Among all the distractions, I hope no one minds that i get a bit of topic and
start talking about aircraft conversions
I was wondering why so far I did not see any headers on corvair engines.
On cars, headers accounted for up to 5% increase in horse power. What is the
reason
why the same can not be true for aircraft conversions? I guess at cruise the
exhaust gases are efficiently
evacuated and maybe headers will not give much of an increase in hp. But still
I think it would be a benefit
for the weight at take-off and climb. And also would increase the smoothness of
the engine.
Looking at the exhaust examples, I wonder if the exhaust really is tuned for
the engine, or can the back-pressure
be smoothed out.

So, that explained the empty bird cage on
the pulpit, and then the pastor began to tell another story.

One day Satan and Jesus were having a
conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden, and he was
gloating and boasting.

"Yes, sir, I just caught a world full of
people down there. Set me a trap, used bait I knew they couldn't resist. Got
'em all!"

"What are you going to do with them?"

Well, yes and no actually. The same castings are used but the contour of

in the archives but I have to ask anyway.

I am asking as I have the Diehl Main Gear setup for a nose-dragger. I would
kinda like to change it to a tail-dragger. I think this is as simple (knock
on wood) as removing the gear, swapping sides, and mounting it to the
forward face of the spar.

Appreciate comments.
