KR> O-200

2016-05-02 Thread Gary
Thanks to all respondents. Another method I found on the WWW was to remove
the oil filter and back fill from there. With a little extra in the filter,
I hand turned the prop until I had oil flow from the oil pressure line.
With everything put back together, cranked the starter motor and bingo,
plenty of oil pressure. Installed spark plugs and had first engine start on
Saturday.

Regards,
Gary

On the a65 we removed the oil cooler port plug, used vynal tubing and a
funnel to gavity feed enough oil to prime the oil pump.
I hope that helps

KR> O-200

2016-04-30 Thread Jeff Scott
The O-200 oil pump usually won't prime turning on the starter and takes nearly
forever to prime at an idle. You can idle the engine right up to damaging the
bearings and still may not get oil pressure. If you want to pre-oil the
engine, the technique Mike describes works pretty well, and is a really good
thing to do if you don't know how the engine was lubed when it was assembled.
If I have had the engine apart and lost the prime on the oil pump, just a few
seconds at 1500 rpm is enough for it to pick up it's prime again.

When assembling any aircraft engine, I use a generous amount of Lubriplate
Assembly Lube on all bearing, seal, and contact surfaces. The exception is the
cam lobes and cam followers, which get a coating of black moly cam break-in
grease on the contact faces. The Lubriplate grease will stay in place if the
engine gets stored for a few years, and will protect the bearings and surfaces
during startup until the oil pump primes and starts providing oil pressure.

The oil cooler mount is where the after market spin on oil filter mounts to the
engine on the back left side of the case. If you have neither, there is a
small bypass plate mounted there on 3 studs.

I never could get my O-200 to self prime, I had left the spark plugs out to
take the pressure off of the rod bearings and to make her easy to spin over but
she just would not pick up the oil. I finally pulled the side plate where the
filter mounts and poured oil in the top hole until it would not take any more.
I think that I even turned the prop backwards to make sure that it would enter
the pump. I then put the plate back on. This worked, I had oil pressure. PS, It
takes a lot of oil, you have to back fill the screen cavity.

2016-04-30 Thread svd
Hi Gary,

Assuming new rings and at least newly honed cylinders (if not new cylinders),
then:

Engine should have straight mineral oil for the first 10hrs.
Ignition OFF
Pull one plug from each cylinder.
Spin by hand, (will pump oil thought engine)
Replace plugs and run?
Worst part is its pretty important to run at more than 75% power for the first
~1-4 hours. (Not entirely compatible with testing out a new plane too! But
the high power (and temp) is important in seating the rings. If you baby it,
the rings may never seat.) Watch for oil consumption to drop and cylinder head
temps to drop - then you?ll know the rings are seated. I?d replace the mineral
oil at 5 and 10 hours, and replace with something like Aeroshell 100.

The which oil conversation seems one of the strongest breezes flapping aviation
gums out there.
I?m no expert, but I have read that most oils start breaking down very close to
~450F. Seems like everything goes to hell about there. High temps around the
exhaust valve stems cause a lot of problems, compound by oil breakdown.

I?m a sucker for technical mumbo-jumbo marketing info and some time ago Castrol
Aviator 100AD used to market their oils as having a higher breakdown temp than
Aeroshell. I have no idea, but I tend to get the Castrol when I can find it.

Cheers,
Owen

Nice engine.

The KR was designed for a VW though . . . and sure have been a lot of us
that have had great good luck with the chugger. Whether with GP or
Revmaster, keep the oil and cylinder head temps under control and they
run reliably and forever. Parts are inexpensive. The best single key to
running them cool is not so much perfect baffling and a big oil cooler -
although these help. The best single key to running a VW in such a way
that it will fun forever without problems is simply to keep the RPM
between 2900 and 3200. Heat is the killer.

Some of the nicest KR's have the 0-200 though. Troy Pettaway's, Larry
Flesner's, Jeff Scott's . . . who am I forgetting?

Mark's immaculate installation of his Corvair always has me drooling when
I go through his pictures.

I think Dan Heath still has an almost brand new fully-converted Corvair
with all the trimmings for sale, keep in mind.

Just some engine thoughts. You can't go wrong with a Type 1 if you run
it as Steve Bennett recommended. It's an amazing little engine. Type IV
would seem to be even better - but as with all the other choices, cost
becomes more of a factor.

Go with a 4 tube exhaust over a 2 into 1 on each side. The
difference in performance is quite noticeable. I think I have four
flanges with a short ( 3 inch ? ) pipe on them in my hangar I'd give

Great choice of engines. The oil tank is not so much a problem as
the carburetor and intake. The oil tank requires only few inches of
drop in the lower cowl. If the cowl is already fabricated, just
remove material until it will mount to the airframe and then
reconstruct to clear the tank and
carburetor. http://www.krnet.org/krs/lflesner/101009203m.jpg The
extra bump in the cowl is well worth the small penalty for the
reliability you get from keeping the engine setup as stock and
reliable as possible. My 0-200 is stock, the way it came the C-150,
and has not given me a single maintenance issue in 475 hours to date
on the carb or intake area.

KR> O-200-8 for sale

2013-05-09 Thread Jeff Scott
One important thing to keep in mind when buying an O-200 is how many times the
crank has been ground. ?There is a limit of two grinds at .010" each. ?I had an
engine that already had the crank ground twice and had a worn crank that was
giving low oil pressure due to the excessive bearing clearance. ?If it had
another grind left it would have been something like $500 for a magnaflux,
grind, and new bearings, but since it had been ground twice it required a new
crank for over $2,000. ?(going on my best memory of prices several years ago,
might be off, but you get the idea) ?Used cranks that are serviceable are hard
to come by and expensive on the O-200 since new cranks are not available for
the C-85 and lots of the remaining O-200 cranks are used up in C-85 to O-200
conversions.

That also brings up another very good option of using a C-85 with the O-200
crank. ?That makes and engine with the power of the O-200, but the weight of
the C-85.
---

The costs have gone up a bit. ?Last time I checked a new O-200 crank was up to
$3300. Regrinding, nitriding, cad plating the flange, and new bearings runs
somewhere around $700 - $750. The -.020 bearing set is kind of pricey as well
if you're down to the last grind. ?

One thing to remember about using the C-85 as the core to build an O-200 is
that you would also want to change the camshaft to make the same HP as an
O-200. ?The C-85 cam has a shorter duration and is designed for a lower RPM
than the O-200 cam. ?I flew my KR behind a stock C-85 for it's first 350 hours.
?It's a good engine. ?With the O-200 crank and pistons, it does produce more
torque and is a desirable upgrade to the C-85, but unless you change the cam,
it's not quite the same thing.

Craig's O-200 is a great candidate for a Cub, Champ, or T-craft project as the
-8 non-electric version of the engine is highly desirable for those planes.
?However, it is not a desirable engine for the KRs due to the lack of
electrics. ?The Lycoming ring gear and starter are a work around that could be
implemented, but the engine really isn't configured to mount the starter up
front and the prop bushings should be swapped out for a longer set of bushings
to support the ring gear if they are available. ?Hand propping a KR can be
done, but is less than ideal due to the short stature of the KR, which leaves
you bending over into the prop when it starts. ?I have propped mine a number of
times when the battery was down. ?Even though I have owned a number of hand
propped planes and have twisted props on just about every GA engine out there,
I am really uncomfortable propping the KR due to the reason cited above.

Never use a single ad as a guide to what an engine is worth. The
price on any given 0-200 can vary by $10,000 high to low. The low
end is a run out engine with worn out accessories and the high end is
a complete overhaul from a reliable shop. You can spend several
thousand dollars just replacing or rebuilding missing or worn out
accessories. Watch the market for months, checking out every engine
for sale, comparing total time, accessories, condition, and
accessories and their condition. When it comes to $800 cylinders
(each), carbs, starters, etc, a good deal might turn into a boat
anchor in a heart beat.

KR> O-200 engines for sale

2010-05-22 Thread Jeff Scott
KR Builders,

I have a pair of O-200 engines for sale. These are 0 SMOH bottom ends,
currently with no cylinders or accessories. Engine #1 is eligible for
installation on a certificated aircraft and meets new standards with the
crankshaft ground to -.010.

Engine #2 is Experimental only. I have no serial number for it, so the data
plate will be stamped EXPERIMENTAL. Also, there was some small amount of
pitting on the prop side of the crank flange that we dressed out. The pitting
was deep enough that the crank is on the margin for what could be ground out
and still pass a yellow tag inspection. The crank is ground -.020 and meets
specs in every other regard. I do not consider it to be unsafe and would fly
behind it in my plane if I had a need for another O-200.

I have a set of rebuildable cylinders that we can overhaul and install on
either of these engines for $2500, or install a set of new cylinders. Both of
these engines have no accessories, but I do have some used accessories
available.

Engine #1 is priced at $5000. With a new set of cylinders (roughly $3500 +
$200 for me to install), one could own a certified O-200 meeting new specs less
accessories for 0 SMOH for $8700.

Engine #2 is priced at $4000. With the set of repairable cylinders I have here
overhauled and installed, one could have an experimental O-200 with 0 SMOH less
accessories for $6500.

For more information on these engines, see my engine web pages at

If interested, email me at . I will not be responding
to an O-200 discussion on the KRNet, so please do not blast the KRNet with
questions regarding these engines. I need to get these engines sold to fund
the completion of the Super Cub project that you'll see in the background of
the pictures on the web pages.

Best regards,

People keep emailing to ask if I had a prop strike. I just found a real
good deal on an overhauled case and I have a friend giving me a bunch of
other parts free. While I can get the deal on the case I was going to build
another engine then swap it with the one on the Mustang and overhaul that
one when I have time. The oil pressure is getting low and I don't want to
just take that one off and be down for a month or two while I rebuild it.

KR> O-200 oil tank

2008-10-12 Thread Oscar Zuniga
I think I'd go with Option No. 1 that Larry Flesner posted... use the
smaller (4 qt.) oil sump and keep on going with your cowling. I have an
A-65 on my Pietenpol and it has a 4 qt. sump. I believe they all
interchange on the small Continentals but the point is, 6 or more quarts are
unnecessary unless you're trying to do some oil cooling via the sump or
you're doing some transoceanic/endurance flying.

Minimum operating oil level is 2 qts. on these engines and if you check oil
level before every flight and have a decently tight engine, it will take a
heck of a long time to blow out or burn two quarts. And if it's spraying
onto your windshield or into your cockpit, that's two less quarts of mess
you'll need to clean out ;o)

KR> O-200 EGT

2008-10-12 Thread Brian Kraut
Does anyone else with an O-200 notice that the EGT gets about 100 degrees
hotter when throttled back than at full throttle? I have noticed that when
I cruise at my normal altitude around 9,000' at full throttle (about 65%
power) that my peak EGT is a little over 1,400 degrees. If I just pull the
throttle back to 3/4 or 1/2 it goes up around 1,500. I have not determined
yet if the carb is just leaning out in the mid range or if it is just normal
to have hotter EGTs in the mid range.

My EGT usually runs in the 1300 to 1400 range but stays pretty

The stock Facet (Marvel Scheibler) MA-3SPA carb is set up to enrichen the
mixture at full throttle to augment cooling and, as Mark said, to help
prevent detonation. The EGTs on my O-200 also drop at full throttle.
Since I fly high altitude all the time (including take off), I always
lean for best performance. When I reduce from full throttle, the engine
will run a little bit rough until I enrichen the mixture a bit.

KR> O-200 instrument markings

2008-10-12 Thread Brian Kraut
I have been trying with no luck to find the correct engine instrument
markings to use on an O-200. I know the oil temp and pressure and CHT red
lines from the service manual, but I don't know where to start and end the
yellow and green arcs, actually it has been a while since I have flown a
powered plane and I can't remember if I need yellow arcs. I know this is
an item that will stop the DAR cold so if anyone knows what to use let me
know.

I did find some Cessna 150 instrument panel pictures on the net, but they
just have the arcs with no corresponding numbers I can use. Perhaps the
numbers are in a 150 manual if someone has one handy.

Hello Brian
Perhaps there is a C150 owners group on the net that you could ask.

Brian,

The correct limits will be listed on the Type Certificate Data Sheets.
You will find that information here:

http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgMakeModel.nsf/MainFrame?OpenFrameSet

It takes awhile to dig this information out, so be patient. No one in a
Cessna 150 Users group can tell you that they have the "100% correct"
information unless they are quoting the TCDS, but this is what was used
when the engine was certified.

KR> O-200 instrument markings

2008-10-12 Thread Allen Wiesner
For the 1973 C-150L manual that I have, the markings for the O-200-A are:

Oil Pressure:
Minimum Idling10 psi (red line)
Normal Operating Range 30 - 60 psi (green arc)
Maximum100 psi (red line)

Oil Temperature Gage:
Normal Operating Range Green Arc (that's all it says,
honest)
Maximum Allowable 240 degrees F (red line)

Fuel Quantity Indicators:
Empty E (red line)

Tachometer:
Normal Operating Range:
At sea level2000 - 2550 RPM (inner
green arc)
At 5000 feet 2000 - 2650 RPM (middle
green arc)
At 10,000 feet 2000 - 2750 RPM (outer
green arc)
Maximum Allowable 2750 RPM (red line)

Suction Gage (Gyro System):
Normal Operating Range4.6 - 5.4 in. Hg (green arc)

There are also several airspeed markings, but I assume that those would not
apply for your usage.

KR> O-200 lean cylinder

2008-10-12 Thread Brian Kraut
I need to choose which cylinder to put the EGT on an O-200A. I know that a
the EGT should go on the leanest cylinder and on a lot models of engines the
lean cylinder is usually the same on all of them. Does the O-200 have one
that normally runs leaner?

#2 has the hottest EGT on mine, but they seem to run so evenly that they
all react the same to minor changes in mxture or throttle. The main
difference in mine is related to not quite equal distances from the
exhaust ports of my probes due to design limitations in my exhaust.

KR> O-200 stub exhausts

2008-10-12 Thread Brian Kraut
Someone told me that short stub exhasts only on an O-200 will ruin the
valves prematurely. He said I should put on real 2 into 1 exhasts. Anyone
have any comments on this?

I don't know about 0-200 engines in particular, but that's conventional
wisdom on engines in general.

And yes, I'm working. I just have a computer in "plane" sight. Rudder is
now working, cable is adjusted, and tailwheel will be shortly. This is
getting pretty cool...

My oil pressure is "by the book" at 40 pounds hot, 60+ on a
cold start. My temp will not quite reach 180 even after 30
minutes in the air so. My cylinder head temp is around
300F after climbout and set up in cruise so I think I have
a basicly sound engine with a good setup (cowl, cooling, etc.)

I got two lengthly posts from two very knowledgeable people and
if they would give me their permission I'd like to share the info
with the group. They know who the are and I think they both
have given me info that will solve my problem.

Right now my prop is rolling down the interstate to Florida to
Ed Sterba's house to be repitched from a 68D to a 64D. I hope
to get at least 200 more rpm for takeoff and climbout and with
the extra rpm on top end my cruise should hold or even improve.
I'll use the downtime to "tweek" the engine and probably go
out to exercise the Tripacer. :-)

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas or a very happy
holiday season for whatever holiday you are celebrating.
