KR>Need help on the best epoxy to use with micro balloons.

2010-12-04 Thread herbert fürle
When I have done the bodywork on my Kr I've got the best results by mixing
resin and micro ballons (no matter what epoxy-resin you use)at first, to a
very dry mixture(no chance to squeeze on to the surface). Then add "household-
alcohol"(in germany it is called Spititus-about 90-95% alcohol)to get a slurry
mixture. It's easy to squeeze this micro slurry on to the surfaces. It takes a
little longer to harden. Never take this mixture for structural bonding!!
The adventure of the hardened mixture is a very good and smooth sanding
condition and it doesn't give cracks later on!(it stays smooth and flexible all
the time). Avoid taking vinyl-esther or polyester resin. This resin gets harder
and harder by the time and you will get cracks later on.For small repairs on a
finished surface you can use "top coat" (most boat manufacturer use "gel
coat"in their molds before they continue with the glass layers ,or "top coat"
when they working on a moldless item). Both products are based on polyesther and
need a special primer to continue with epoxy resin! To get a good surface and
stay light on a moldless wing ,the best way is, to start with a very good
preparation of your foamshape. That causes in a minor amount of micro and resin
for your lay up and finaly just as little micro for sanding the surface to its
color condition. Once again, using colered "top coat" as described results in
unwanted weight and cracks later on, due to it's uncontrolled thickness.

2010-10-06 Thread rkp...@comcast.net

I personally am using using the west system. One of the things to remember is,
when mixing micro balloons, the more micro balloons the easier to sand and it
will weigh less.

Hi, I?m a new pilot and a new KR owner;

I live near Houston TX and wanted a inexpensive airplane both to build and to
opperate. I just picked up a project that was started in 1974.I bought this Kr
1 (almost completed project) that is in amazingly good shape. It's all there,
motor, prop, gages, canopy and everything is done except the finish.

My little plane needs body work!, I called around to aircraft supply houses and
couldn't get any clear guidance on the latest improved bonding agents with
filler.  I read the article on "micro balloons" and how to do the bodywork but
again wasn't clear on the epoxy to use.

Would someone who know this kind of stuff give me some direction and a resource
to get? Please enlighten me. I would love to call someone and ask questions
about body work i.e. adding more layers of fiber etc Anyone in Texas also
would be good. :)

Sounds about right for a KR-2 with retractable gear. Also check the longeron
material lengths, approx 5/8" square x approx 12' in length. KR-2S's have
longerons that are 12'-2 cut from stock approx. 14' long.

I posted the message below a few weeks ago--thanks for the responses. Since
then I compared a fragment of a packing list to a packing list I found on the
internet for a KR-2S(http://www.jgokey.com/rr_kr2_manual_pt6-6.pdf).

The fragment matched the list for the KR-2S with the exception that the packing
list fragment has "landing gear hinge wedges" and the KR-2S does not.

Any ideas on which model this kit might be? (I can send a jpg of the packing

For those builders that feel "electrically challenged" , keep it simple.
You don't have to have a one page diagram for the entire airplane.
Use a separate page or portion of a page for each circuit and draw
it as you do the wiring. List each connection in the circuit such as
(main power buss, pin #1) to (circuit breaker #1, pin 1) (circuit
breaker #1, pin #2) to (fuel pump switch, common pin) (fuel pump
switch, normally open contact) to (fuel pump +) (fuel pump -) to
(ground buss, pin #1).

You can later troubleshoot the circuit even without a drawing. Make
the drawing or list of connections while you do the wiring. If you
wait even till the next day you are likely to forget the exact routing.

Other than that, keep the high amp circuits such as battery to starter
as short as possible, and try to make all terminal strips and components
as assessable as possible. Above all, don't feel bad when even with
your best efforts and reasoning, things don't turn out perfect. There will
always be something that you could have done better.

Like you said, there comes a time when you have to stop thinking about
it and just do it. Correct your mistakes as you go.

Larry Flesner
