Keep in mind that I am still a 'wanna be', but it seems to me that if one
were to take some 1" X 3 or 4" boards of the appropriate length, placed top
and bottom, and use a couple of wood working clamps over the tabs/ailerons,
Mark Jones attachment method would allow you to bend the tabs to your
heart's content without damaging anything. i.e., the boards would take the
load from bending... aluminum is pretty soft; 0.010" to 0.030" thick. Much
thicker might be a problem. JMHO

I mounted mine with screws because bending the aluminum while mounted
could damage the trailing edge of the control surface. I guess if you
used .010" aluminum sheet that would probably work though, but then I'd
worry about flutter (I'm not happy if I'm not worried about something).
With screws I can remove it in half a minute, measure it, bend it on the
brake, and reinstall without damaging anything. That's getting it
dialed in to start with, but a prop change later can also require
another adjustment. With N891JF, tiny drag contributors are not
something I worry about, and I'm not sure how sturdy these trailing
edges were constructed

Re: KR> fixed trim tabs

2020-05-18 Thread Mark Jones via KRnet
As a follow up to my method of mounting And adjusting my trim tab:

The double sided 3M tape I used is their 444 tape. To adjust the angle of my
trim tab, it could simply be removed by using dental floss under the edge of
the tab and floss it right off the aileron. However, I didn’t remove mine to
adjust it. I took two pieces of aluminum bar and clamped one over the taped
section of the trim tab and one on top to secure the trailing edge. I then
proceed to bend the tab by hand as needed. It may take a couple of flights to
find the cruise sweet spot on the trim tab. This worked great for me but as
Flesner always says. “Your results may vary”.

Hi Guys.

I too had this style trim tab on my aileron. The way I mounted mine was with 3M
double sided tape and I put over 500 hours flight time on it and it never
loosened up. Mounting it this way is just another way to reduce a little drag.
Also mounted my Mylar aileron gap seals with this tape and they too never
loosened up.
