Yes, wood can be heavy. But you can find lightweight wood. I have two block pillows. One is 3 x 3 blocks. My DH and I made the base for it from half-inch plywood and the base trim that goes around a room (what is that called, wainscotting? baseboard trim?). The wood trim is rather pretty, but yes
