Unless the new paint is messy and just 'too' ugly, I would say leave it
alone. Removing it would probably remove the original too.and this is 'the
history' of the bobbin. I would try to just try rubbing those areas with ones
fingers to use the skin oils and friction to 'age the area. Lorri

I'm inclined to agree with Lorri that any attempt to repair the bobbins
might cause more harm than good. Just accept them as examples of
terrible warnings of what not to do with old bobbins!

I think first you need to make a decision. Are these bobbins an investment in

Looking on Google to try and resolve this discussion, and to start with I
couldn't find any mention of pewter and cold.
First I looked at the various types of pewter and found that:-

That was very interesting about pewter.
I have an old wooden bobbin with pewter spots, - that is no longer nice to
use, as the pewter spots have expanded, and are very rough on the fingers, as
well as snagging on other threads.
I was told it was corroding pewter, which expands as it corrodes.

Reading Liz's story of the student with a learning difficulty, I think maybe
sometimes it's not the fault of the tutor or the student when the student
doesn't understand - it may just be that the class format isn't right for that

A request for Jeri (or anyone else with the know how) - I know your forte is
the preservation of costume and textiles but what recommendations do you
have for storing old wood and bone lace bobbins?
I know what some of you will say - that bobbins are to be used - and I would
agree to a point.

I use most of my old bobbins - one dated 1842, and a Hanging bobbin, etc. I
have one of Grandma's old bone bobbins in the safe - as it has a chipped head,
and snags the thread! It is very old, so was passed down to Grandma from ?
her grandma!
