[lace] webshot album

2004-06-13 Thread The Browns
I was so amazed that I had managed to set up the webshot album that I
forgot to mention in the orginal note who sheilabucks is, I must
explain that it is the new name for Sheila Brown of
Sawbridgeworth,E.Herts. for use with the photo album. I didn't want to
be Sheila Brown 116! Never thought there would be as many with my
name, but wouldn't it be a hoot if we all had the same birthday!.
Hope this clears up any confusion.
From a lovely, sunny Sawbo' good morning to you all.

[lace] Bridal Handkerchief

2004-06-13 Thread Ron and Jeanne Vavruska
A while ago, I asked if anyone had the poem for the bridal handkerchief
which will eventually be changed into a baby cap. I have the poem for the
baby cap and know there is the bridal poem out there somewhere. I had it
once for lost it in changing computers. My niece is getting married and I
am making the handkerchief. I never got an answer to my last request and am
making it again hoping that someone who did not see my request last time
will see it now. The wedding is fast approaching and the lace is almost
finished. Thanks in advance.

I have a poem for the other way around!

A tiny square of linen
And a dainty edge of lace
Designed into a bonnet
To frame your baby's face

After baby's worn it
Fold and tuck away
And it becomes a hanky
For baby's wedding day

Not a lot of help to you, I know, but it might be useful for someone else.

I've had a bit of a search, but I can't find a poem for a handkerchief
for a bride, only for a christening.

Jeanne, when you posted last time, someone challenged me to make
one up, so this time I've had a go. I used the poem Jacquie just posted
as a starting point.

A dainty edge of snow white lace
A square of linen fine
It's made just for your wedding day
With hopes the sun will shine.

And after celebrations
Fold and store away
And it becomes a bonnet
For an infant's christening day.

Just fold a deep hem over
And gather on the fold
Some ribbons on the corner
Then its history can be told.

For it was carried on the day
When bub's mum became a wife
And it carried all the maker's hopes
For a happy wedded life

Then perhaps in many years to come
It can be used anew
To grace another wedding day
In the hope the sky is blue!

OK I guess I'll put my two cents in.

There is a little hanky,
given to you this wonderful day.
I see it with lace and ribbon.
Such a little treasure in every possible way.

Not sure how the legend started,
but a nice one from above,
just a little way to prove
to someone that you love.

And then one day in the future,
when parents you shall be.
You take the little hanky,
And a bonnet it shall be.

And when your children are all grown,
you snip the cap apart,
And then you have an heirloom,
that will come straight from your heart.

Apologies for posting to the whole list, but I seem to have mislaid
Steph Peters' e-address...

When you appliqued your tatted piece (elephant?) to a T-shirt, did you
strengthen/stabilize the wrong side of the knitted fabric first?

I have a piece of lace, and a T-shirt which will look good with it, but
worry about the different properties of the two fabrics (the lace
doesn't stretch)... Please respond in private, if you think it's of no
interest to the rest of the list.

Hi Tamara, et al

Tamara wrote When you appliqued your tatted piece (elephant?) to a
T-shirt, did you strengthen/stabilize the wrong side of the knitted fabric

I have several pieces of lace sewn on t-shirts. The first one was a piece
of Honiton, a small flower and leaves. I washed the $3.99 sale price
t-shirt to make sure it was colour-fast, then stitched it on all round
including the centre of the flower. I have never added anything to the
wrong side of the fabric.

I made a Milanese motif with Pat Read in England, in the fall of 2002, then
came home and made 2 more, same pattern but different braids. I then
stitched them onto a t-shirt in a row from left shoulder down on the
diagonal. There again I stitched down all around including the inner edges
where the motif crossed over itself.

The Honiton piece and its t-shirt gets thrown into the washing machine on a
regular basis and has never been a problem. The Milanese is normally
washed by hand because it is a much better quality t-shirt and I prefer to
do it by hand, while it is still looking new!

When the Honiton t-shirt wears out, I'll just snip the stitches on the
back, take off the lace and stitch it onto something else. I'm looking for
the right shirt to stitch my small piece of Withof Duchesse on to. It cost
me a fortune to make (two full courses), so I need to do something with it,
rather than just leaving it in my work binder.

I also dont drive so this is an added difficulty.

Any ideas about suitable accomodation?

Since I will be in Philadelpia from the 19th of June to the 30th, I hope to
meet local lace makers. I'll have one of my pillows with me and some of the
research I'm doing on lacemaking in early French Canada.

Yvonne and others,

Does your address appear on any Web pages? One of my addresses, my old
university address, was grabbed by spammers from LaRae's Locate-a-Lacemaker
page. I didn't know it was there as a clickable link (those are very easy
for spammers to grab automatically), but when I found it I asked LaRae to
replace it with my Yahoo account, where I don't care about the spam because
it goes straight into a bulk mail folder and then into trash. That account
does get spam like you describe, targeted at lacemakers.

Also, do you belong to a guild or fiber-related organization? Some guild
sites put up their members addresses and don't tell them about it. That can
also lead to spam if the Web designer doesn't insert spaces or other
spam-foiling things to disguise the address.

On the topic of avoiding general spam, I strongly recommend that everyone
get a yahoo account to use when you need to provide your e-mail address for
some reason. Try not to use your personal home account for anything but
personal mail and trusted lists. For registering for downloads, registering
to read on-line newsletters, filling out surveys, playing games, use an
address that you don't care about. Remember to check it from time to time
and throw out all the junk. Also, if you register for a site and they have
to send you a password, use your throwaway account and remember to check
it for the automatic e-mail they send you.

I should add that one should be cautious when writing to businesses and
strangers. A friend of mine wrote to Leisure Arts to find a place where she
could buy some of their patterns. She never got a reply, but she noticed a
significant increase in craft-related spam.

Best wishes,

Avital,
who's had almost no spam for three years

Hi all,

I don't usually get spam through on my email but one came through today and
I was wondering if anyone else got it. Something about buying embroidery
from Asia. I thought it may have picked up tatters or lacers addys. I don't
really appreciate these sellers hijacking lackmakers or tatters private
emails. Very poor form.

Jenny spotted some Russian lace books on e-bay
(http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=19158item=81108970
08rd=1)

I bought the same two books (well, not these copies or they wouldn't be for
sale still!) from the same seller several months ago, so they are not as rare
as she is implying. As you can see, they are number 1 2; I wonder if this
was all that was printed or if there are some different ones stashed away in a
warehouse somewhere. I don't remember how much I paid, but not an enormous
amount. They are in as new condition, and were well packaged and came quite
quickly. Very exciting to get a parcel from Russia.

They are interesting with typical Russian style designs in. A lot of the
contents are self explanatory, but there are occasions when I wish I could speak
Russian. No photographs of the lace, only drawings of the type you can see.
The close up stitch diagrams are slightly different to normal. The thread
path is shown very clearly, but also have things a bit like speech bubbles
(like in comics) around bits of them, which I presume is indicating some subtle
point (referred to in the text) regarding that stitch. Very frustrating
because I don't know if I am missing some skill or technique that would alter the
quality of the lace, or if they are just an idiot's guide for beginners.
There also seem to be more patterns than what I have worked out must be the
instructions (bobbins, thread etc) for those patterns.

Unfortunately, the cover designs are not included (unless the language void
means I'm missing something) but the T-shirt one shown is.

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: On vacation

2004-06-13 Thread Tamara P. Duvall
I think I've seen this one before, possibly even right here, on chat.
But it's still funny enough to be worth reviving...

From: A. N.
Two priests decided to go to Hawaii on vacation. They were determined
to make this a real vacation by not wearing anything that would identify
them as clergy. As soon as the plane landed they headed for a store and
bought some really outrageous shorts, shirts, sandals, sunglasses, etc.
The next morning they went to the beach dressed in their tourist
garb. They were sitting on beach chairs, enjoying a drink, the
sunshine and
the scenery when a drop dead gorgeous topless blonde in a thong
bikini
came walking straight towards them. They couldn't help but stare. As
the
blonde passed them, she smiled and said Good Morning, Father. Good
Morning,
Father. nodding and addressing each of them individually, then passed
on by.

They were both stunned. How in the world did she know they were
priests?

So, the next day, they went back to the store and bought even more
outrageous outfits. These were so loud, you could hear them before you
even
saw them. Once again, in their new attire, they settled on the beach in
their chairs to enjoy the sunshine. After a while, the same gorgeous
topless blonde, wearing only a string bikini, taking her sweet time,
came walking toward them. Again she nodded at each of them, said Good
morning, Father. Good morning, Father. and started to walk away.

One of the priests couldn't stand it any longer and said. Just a minute
young lady
Yes, Father?
We are priests and proud of it, but I have to know, how in the world
did you know we are priests, dressed as we are?
Father, it's me, Sister Angela. she replied!
