[lace] Re: Australian Wildflower patterns

2015-04-07 Thread Rosemary Brown
Thanks for all the suggestions I have been sent in my search to identify
my Australian wildflower pattern. The return on my request has been
quite amazing: (I always knew lacemakers were brilliant.)

I'll post a picture of the handkerchief when finished - if wedding
preparations don't get in the way of normality.

[lace] Trip to Europe - lace museums/centers to visit?

2015-04-07 Thread Meghann McCrory
Hi all,

I'm planning a trip to Europe (with mom) partly to see some of the lace
making towns and museums. We will be in London, Belgium, Italy, and
Croatia. As for Croatia I know Pag and Hvar are major lace centers -
though Pag has a reputation as a party city - and I'm hoping Hvar is a bit
quieter. Anyone know? Are there demonstrations or archives there that are
accessible?

We are certainly visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Are
there other museums or smaller collections in any of those countries that
you would suggest? I would really love to see some historical examples as
well as current lace making. I know it's a very touristy thing to do/see
in some of these places, so any advice about how to see the more authentic
side of things would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Hi

There is a Fan Museum in London. It is small and has some beautiful lace
fans there. It might be a good idea to see if they will displaying any lace
fans when you will be visiting. The display apparently changes quite often.

[lace] Cotona and spangles

2015-04-07 Thread Lorelei Halley
Susie
Many years ago I did some simple Honiton patterns from Luxton and from
Thompson. I enlarged the patterns and used thicker threads.
http://lynxlace.com/learningbobbinlace-samples.html#Honiton Click on each
image to see the detail.

For the lavender leaves and the purple flower -- from Luxton -- I enlarged the
patterns to 200% and used tatting cotton #80. She states that those patterns
in original size were a little larger than typical Honiton scale. (Otherwise I
would have to have used a finer thread.)

The multi-colored flower and the purple hankie corner are from Sue Thompson.
Both were enlarged to 215% of the original size. I used tatting cotton for
the flower, but it was a bit thick. I should have used something finer. For
the corner I used DMC Retors #30 -- equivalent to Broder machine 30. And it
was perfect.

How I arrived at those enlargement sizes was a mixture of logic and guesswork.
I knew the thread sizes recommended for the original size. I had made samples
of torchon grounds and cloth stitch at various pattern sizes to see what
worked for various threads. So I figured out what thread I wanted to use, and
enlarged it to a percentage that should work. Then I took account of whether
the learning patterns were at normal scale, or slightly larger for beginning
students. Look here for my explanation.

Yes, it’s a nice museum but be aware that it’s not in central London,
it’s in Blackheath which is about 8 miles from the centre of London, at
least half an hour driving, but could be much more depending on the traffic,
or 20+ minutes on the train - remembering that one of the London stations
en-route is undergoing massive refurbishment and closures at present so rail
travel is also likely to be subject to delays and diversions.

I do have the Museum of Costume and lace on my Pinterest board for museums
in Belgium and the Netherlands,
https://www.pinterest.com/LaceNews/lace-museums-belgium-the-netherlands/,
unfortunately I had it located at the Brussels airport so maybe it got
missed. I just fixed it. Unfortunately the mapping function recently added
to Pinterest isn't all that detailed, and if something isn't included you
have to find the closest place.

I do now have 13 Pinterest boards with 121 places with lace collection
listed on the LaceNews Pinterest site https://www.pinterest.com/LaceNews/
(public and private museums mostly), and more are being added all the time.
For each pin I've tried to add a few lines of description of each
collection, and am trying to update these as I learn more about each one.

Dear Meghann,

Having sent you to Laurie's site, I am surprised to see that she didn't
include the Museum of Costume and Lace in Brussels.

http://www.brusselsmuseums.be/en/museum/76-museum-of-costume--lace-museums-
of-the-city-of-brussels

The Kantcentrum in Bruges used to have a display. I am not sure what is
going on there since it changed hands.
The flax museum in Kortrijk near Bruges is very good.
There was a small museum over the Rococo lace shop in Bruges. There are
occasional lace making demos outside lace shops.

Of the Italian museums I recommend the one on Burano, recently redone, if
you see no other. Sometimes there is a lace demo there. The Palazzo
Davanzati in Florence has only just redone its lace room and is very good. I
always
like the Poldi Pezzoli in Milan. The lace is entirely in an
unprepossessing metal storage/display thing in an unvisited hallway, but once
you find it
you can pull out the drawers, and leaf through the upright framed display
items to your heart's content. You may have to ask where it is.

The Kantcentrum museum in Bruges has been moved (only a little way) and
remodelled . It opened last year and I visited last October. I was very
impressed. It is modern, with exhibits of fantastic lace, and interactive
displays of how lace, both bobbin and needle, is made. Well worth a visit.
Upstairs, above the museum, there are often classes in progress, which you can
visit and watch the lac being made. Downstairs again there is the Kantcentrum
shop!

Re: [lace] Trip to Europe - V A?

2015-04-07 Thread Dmt11home
Dear Meghann
It is my impression that the V A no longer has lace in it. Instead it is
in a study center not centrally located in London. I am unsure what kind of
 access there is there.
You mention a lot of countries in your email, but it is unclear how long
you are going to be traveling in the countries, what cities you are going to
be near. and what kind of transport you will have. In reality, it would
take a very long time for someone to try to write out all the museums that
have something to do with lace in Belgium and Italy. Perhaps a first step
would be to go to the Pinterest site maintained by Laurie Waters which has
Lace Museums by country and do a little scoping out.
https://www.pinterest.com/LaceNews/ Things change all the time with lace
museums, exhibits come
down, museums close, so it is always best to check for the most up to date
information and to confirm with an email. Even when a museum has a lace
collection, it is not at all unusual for none of it to be on display.
Also, Laurie maintains a site: Lacenews.net where she keeps track of lace
events all over the world which you might find useful.

2015-04-07 Thread Amy O'Malley
I was at both the Kantmuseum in Bruges and the Museum of Costume and Lace
in Brussels last fall which were mentioned in other posts. Here's my take:

Bruges: The museum is quite small, but nice, and they do daily
demonstrations, but be sure to check the times before you go. I think the
demos are in the afternoon, but I missed them because it didn't work with
my schedule. But there is also a lace shop called 't Apostelientje
conveniently across the street from the museum. You must visit there!
Everything is hand made (certified), both antique and contemporary, and
they have even better pieces than the museum (IMHO)! Make sure to go
through the main part of the shop to the small room off to the side to see
the good stuff. They also have some lace supplies. But be sure to check the
hours before you go. www.apostelientje.be

Brussels: Most of the lace is in cabinets in drawers in a darkly lit corner
of one of the floors. They had some really nice stuff that was worth
seeing, and I'm grateful it is on display at all, but is was a little
annoying to have to go through all the squeeky drawers and hard to see in
the low light.

You're trip sounds lovely! And lace makes nice, light souvenirs!

Kind regards,
Amy O'Malley
