[lace] Re: Warp/Weft

2010-06-15 Thread Susan Reishus
For warp, I think of Star Trek.  Warp speed is obviously going forward, not
sideways.  Robin P.

I think for some lay persons, they think of the word warp as being something
that is warped, so often think that that could be the thread that gets
shaped/wrapped/warped around things, so confusion.
Carpet mills make the warp speed reference as in Star Trek, when
selling/explaining.  Weft for a speech impediment or rhyme with Left and Right
is very common.
I like the warp like the strings of a harp (perhaps because I made it up
myself).  Admittedly, harp strings aren't completely
vertical/plumb/perpendicular to the floor, but it is simple and fast.
Oddly I don't think of warp speed having to be in a straight line, just fast.
Perhaps it is my years of driving racing cars and thinking of G force.  Some
scientists concur it would be nearly impossible to go in a straight line.
Actually, it engages Einstein's relativity, so one could say that as with
time, it is an illusion and rather more of a holographic experience based upon
a warp/bubble and perception.  So, perhaps a better relationship with bobbin
lace.  Perhaps better this; related to chat.
Interesting the nuances of the human brain and it's experiences and
references.  Best,Susan Reishus

RE: [lace] announcements

2010-06-15 Thread Jo
I'd like to start over with new listings, but while I could
probably manage to put it together, keeping it up to date
going forward is just going to continue to be a problem.

Why not create http://arachne.wikispaces.com/
Then anyone can help you maintain whatever list or faq you (or someone else)
starts.

I have one and experience no spam even though I configured it completely
open without even requiring to sign up to make changes. Should spam become a
problem, you can tighten security with a few moderators to accept newbees.
User friendly and for a free scheme the adds are not very dominant. No
affiliate, just a happy user: http://bobbinwork.wikispaces.com

Shirley,

Very interesting. I had to go check on my oven bags and mine are made by the
Reynolds Co. I'll have to
check the store and see if they have the ones by Glad. Wonder if ours would be
acid free?

[lace] New Idea: A Summer Postcard Swap

2010-06-15 Thread pene piip

Dear fellow Arachneans,

As the summer starts buzzing, and plans are being made, I had a simple
idea come to me.
I'm currently waiting for a postcard to arrive from Norway I'm sure
that I'm not the only person who likes to receive as well as send
postcards to friends around the world.
And I'm sure that there are people like me who can't afford to travel to
a convention, congress or even a weekend workshop or retreat.

So, I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in participating in a
Postcard Swap?
The postcard can depict something related to lace or spiders, but does
not have to.
If you like my idea wish to send a fellow Arachnean a postcard then
just send me a private email with Postcard Swap in the subject line,
and include your home or postal snail-mail address.
Indicate if you are staying home or will be away - there is no need
to tell me where you are going.
If you wish to send more than 1 postcard let me know that fact also.
I'll set a maximum of 3.

This has to be done fairly quickly, so please send me your info asap.
Then I'll match up a home name with an away name next Sunday send
out emails on Tuesday.

Your postcard(s) may then be sent anytime during July August.
Just remember to take the addresses with you. Or write them on
envelope(s) ready for the postcard.

If this is a dumb idea, please tell me that I'm crazy.

2010-06-15 Thread Barbara Ballantyne
Some caution would be wise here.

The Conservation section at the Powerhouse Museum said a few years ago that the
manufacturers now include other chemicals so the oven bags are probably no
longer of archival status.

The older ones are often stiffer and more crinkly. The newer ones are more
like plastic.

They were so convenient too
