[lace] War Laces - Hoover Presidential Library Museum, IOWA

2015-05-10 Thread Jeriames
Through the years, I've written extensively about Herbert Hoover and the
Belgian Laces called War Laces. So, just a little bit this time around.

Those planning to attend the IOLI Convention this Summer in Coralville
IOWA, might like to know that the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and
Museum is in West Branch Iowa. You can collect historical information about
the
humanitarian efforts of Hoover - to save the Belgians from starvation by
providing aid. This year there is a special Humanitarian exhibit that I
would guess will provide a lot of added history, per what I read at the
address given below this paragraph. And be sure to read what is in the
galleries, including the one gallery devoted to Lou Henry Hoover, wife of the
President.

http://www.hoover.archives.gov/exhibits/

It would be nice if someone on the IOLI convention committee would tell us
about laces at this museum. (Perhaps a lot more War Lace than is usually
shown - in this year's special exhibit?)

This chat has made me go back to our photos taken when in Washington DC,
and
the visit, with the IOLI tour, - to the American History Museum, and the
wonderful day out we had on that tour.

We saw many of the pieces shown on the web site, and luckily DH took photos
of many of the pieces! I must admit that at the time I was more interested
in the Old laces - 17th 18th Century pieces, and only briefly looked at
these laces, as, to me, they were Modern!!

Last year there was a Very interesting talk, during one lunch time (I
think)
on the War laces, and slides were shown. I wish I had heard that talk
before
seeing the History Museum pieces, as I would have appreciated them so much
more!

Thank you, Karen, for alerting us to this web site, where we can see these
remarkable pieces, and appreciate the effort that went into not only making
them, but selling them and getting them out of the country, too. The
suffering that went on, for these lacemakers, - but they still produced
beautiful pieces of lace. Amazing.

Rereading your original post I should probably add that I haven't actually done
it, nor have I used a bolster pillow. So I can't speak to whether not the
weight of the pillow would be an issue. I have thought about someday using it
as a large roller for a scarf.

[lace] Bolster pillow

2015-05-10 Thread Susan
Hello All! To get ready for IOLI in Iowa, I need to make a bolster pillow.
While I was at the gym, I noticed foam rollers. Eureka--they are closed cell
seem to hold a pin like an Ethafoam cookie pillow! Has anyone made a bolster
from a foam roller/tube? I was planning to wrap it in wool before applying a
cover. Is there any reason to reconsider the construction? It will be very
light weight so should I try to add some? Any suggestions from the experts?
Many thanks. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, USA

Karen - were you one of the volunteers who looked after us on that
afternoon?
We had the morning to ourselves to roam the whole museum, and then after
lunch we were taken down to the 3 Hidden Rooms where masses of lace was
laid out for us to drool over!!! Even the Needlelace Bayeux Tapestry - or
part of it!

[lace] Bookmark Exchange

2015-05-10 Thread Lin Hudren
We are down to the last days for sign ups for the bookmark exchange but
don't worry if you are a day or so behind. I will make it happen. Just
contact me (*linhud...@gmail.com linhud...@gmail.com*) and it will be
worked out. Also, if you are delayed in mailing your bookmark to your
partner, let your partner and me know so we can take the worry out of the
wonderful anticipation. This is to be FUN not a job or chore. I will be
sending out the exchange partner pairings in a day or so - no later than
5/15 but sooner if able. I am always anxious to know who will be getting
my bookmark and what far away place I will be receiving mail from. But if
you were on holiday or didn't see the announcement until the last minute -
join in anyway. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I hope there is time to
get a bookmark made and in the mail even after this week.

The schedule is going like this:

May 4-12 Sign Ups

May 15 Exchange partner assignments made and emailed out

June 13All bookmarks should be in the mail (if possible)

There is still room on the carousal. No one has claimed the lion yet. The
critters are all whimsical creatures and so very colorful - much like
lace. How exciting. Come and join in the fun. If this is your first
time, you are going to have lots of fun. If you have been doing this for
years, you know how much fun it can be. Any type of lace and pattern is
appropriate. Any skill level is welcome. This is creative license at
its best. Don't be shy. Remember, this is your time to shine.

Hugs, Lin and the Mali

[lace] Needlelace on the Thistle Threads Blog

2015-05-10 Thread Jeriames
Thanks to Susan Hottle.

Topic changed, for our archives. Please remember that Stumpwork utilizes
needlelace techniques in many imaginative ways.

It was my good fortune to spend some time talking with Tricia Wilson Nguyen
at the Winterthur Museum Needlework Conference in October 2014. She was a
most informative speaker on the subject, The Workers Behind the Work:
17th Century Caskets and the People Who Made Them. In this case, the caskets
were tabletop containers for a young woman's small treasures, fitted out
with cabinet doors, mirrors, and drawers, all covered with embroidery and
stumpwork.

If you read her blogspot, you will learn a lot about working with materials
that are often difficult to obtain today. Because of this, she has hired
a number of professional crafts people to make all manner of miniature
things that are needed to finish her projects. Kits are available, because
the individual would find it next to impossible to source some things like
tiny hinges and keyholes. (You'll find she sells small packets of spangles
for period laces.) Tricia is also behind the Layton Jacket which was
recreated at Plimoth Plantation (Plymouth Rock - where the Pilgrims landed in
what is now Massachusetts). Our Devon worked on the gold lace for this.
The original jacket and portrait are at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She
has also written and designed quality needlework projects for specialty
magazines, and so forth.

This amazing woman has a PhD in Engineering, and our technology members
will find her background of interest. It runs throughout her blog and older
blogs. If you don't read all the way down on the current pages Susan
provided, you will not learn (in right column) that Tricia is dyslexic. If
you
know someone who is dyslexic, Tricia's success might be useful for
overcoming some of the challenges. I am not a medical person, but find what
Tricia
has been doing day-by-day to be quite astounding, magical and inspiring.
You don't have time for lace? Look at the family, businesses and many
projects (including a newly-minted patent) she is able to keep afloat!
