[lace] Help with research please? Possibly genealogical????????

2016-08-14 Thread Brian Lemin
Hello all,

1. There is an intimation in Whiting that the bobbins of East Devon
(Honiton bobbins) were all decorated in "Workshops" dedicated to that
function.

2. Theses could possibly be associated with lace dealers or shops
dealing in lace making needs; but not necessarily so.

3. My studies show that clearly a number of designs can be associated
with one person or a workshop.

When I was studying East Midland bobbins I had access to a set of census
disks for the UK and managed to find a few names of bobbin makers that have
not featured in Springett. I did this by searching under occupations.

Since I started concentrating on the East Devon (Honiton) bobbins I have
struggled to ascertain if these bobbins were indeed decorated by specialists
in workshops as "rumored". It dawned on me rather late, that I should
search the Census records for bobbin decoration, painting, design, even
turning/making (or other innovative searches, that might reveal this sort of
information)

I no longer have access to these census disks, and though I have tried very
hard to do similar searches on the free genealogical data bases, I have
failed to be able to search for these occupations in
Devon/Somerset/Dorset/Hampshire.

Is there a possibility that any of you have these disks or access to them
and could do the searches for me? Please.

I know it is a big ask, and is a lot of work, but it is an unanswered
question relating to these bobbins, for which their decoration is pretty
well, the only distinctive feature of the bobbins.

If you are able to help I would be delighted. Drop me a note if you want,
before you get searching or else, solve the problem I am trying to answer,
then tell me about what you find before you write it up for publication.
(Please) :)

Many thanks.

Brian

PS I found a bobbin with FIVE sets of spangles on it! You may have seen it
too.

I must tell someone about this. I had a visit this afternoon from the

[lace] Bobbin Lace 12 Months Challenge Project

2016-08-14 Thread Olga IEROMINA
Jeanette, Diana,

Thank you!

Dear Gon,

Thank you! Hope to see you too!
Your project "Every week an ending or insertion" is also one of sources for
inspiration!

Dear Joepie,

I understand that one month and one lace piece is not enough to master the
technique. But it really helps to structure my time and focus on completing
the lace sample. I spent 1-1,5 hours a day on lacemaking. Usually it takes
15-20 days to complete the piece. So I have some non-lace days too :)

It is a challenge but I enjoy it! Every day I am waiting for the time I can
sit and play with bobbins. Also support from virtual friends is very
valuable!

I studied Russian lacemaking initially and I feel the most comfortable with
it. But it is so interesting to try different pillows/bobbins and to
compare techniques.

Best wishes,
Olga

Re: [lace] Construction foam pillows

2016-08-14 Thread Veronika Irvine
I needed to make a bunch of large pillows for a workshop just a few months
ago. I went to a local store that sells hot tubs. Every hot tub is shipped
with a Styrofoam cover on top. I was able to get the foam for free because it
was just destined for the dump. If you choose this route, be aware that some
hot tub brands use a very nice thick piece of Styrofoam while others are a bit
thin, so ask to look through all the available pieces. My husband used a
table saw to cut down the large sheets. The edges came out very straight and
clean - I of course had to vacuum up the shop afterwards but it was not much
worse than cleaning up sawdust.

I am very glad to hear that you are teaching a group of Girl scouts about lace
making. I have long thought that it would be nice to have a badge for lace
making added to the Girl Scout curriculum.

All the best,
Veronika

Re: [lace] Hermitage Russia and Buckingham Palace, London

2016-08-14 Thread ELIZABETH PASS
Hello Nathalie,

We visited the Hermitage Museum 3 years ago and I only saw one piece of lace,
and that was a simple Torchon edging to a cover of some description.
Unfortunately I don't read or speak Russian so I can't say what it was for.

The museum is vast and very busy. We were on a guided tour, so were hundreds
(no exaggeration) of others, so didn't have much time to stop and admire. That
said, I would go again if I had the chance.

You'll find a good selection of the lace from the Hermitage if you try this
website and put 'lace' into the serch box.

http://www.hermitagemuseum.org/wps/portal/hermitage/?lng=en

Yesterday I went to Buckingham Palace to see the special exhibition. This year
it displays clothing belonging to the Queen throughout her life. Her wedding
dress is there and also her Coronation Robe. There is a whole range of dresses
and outfits for formal and informal occasions; weddings, ceremonial; state
banquets, royal visits to foreign countries, etc. Many of the dresses are
accompanied by photos showing them being worn and descriptions of the occasion.

Although there are no foreign language description in the display cases, you
can borrow a personal gadget (like a smart phone) which has masses of
informaton in several languages with photos, videos, commentries and maps. Off
hand I think there was English, Spanish, French, Chinese, German, Russian,
maybe others too. The guide book was also published in the same(?) languages.
Added to that, many of the stewards are young people from different
backgrounds, wearing lapel badges if they speak languages other than English.
They are all very friendly and knowledgeable too.

Some friends and I visit the palace every summer. This year we've been lucky
as the railway company has a special offer of day return tickets for £16, much
cheaper than the usual £40+. But I'm tired today!

[lace] Construction foam pillows

2016-08-14 Thread Janice Blair
I have purchased the foam pillows at the last two conventions then cut them
down so I could hand carry the section with the lace, pricking and bobbins.
Last month, I used a straight edge to score the foam and then used a
serrated knife to cut the foam.  It fit perfectly into my block pillow at
home.  Last year my friends husband cut my two pillows down on his table saw
before I flew home.  That was easier but a bit frightening as I saw my
bobbins, wrapped up in the cover I used for the pillow rushing toward the saw.
It sliced it off like a dream.  This year my cut was not as perfect, but it
did not make a mess in the bedroom.  This is the way I will use for pillows
at conventions in the future when flying.  This year I had close to a hundred
Binche bobbins on the pillow for carrying home.  They got a little tangled
when I was cutting the foam, next year I will pin them down more so they don't
slide out of the bobbin holders.Janice
