Thanks Karen for posting this URL - I had lost any previous messages that had
this link.

What fun I had looking at the photos! If you haven’t tried the link yet -
they are high definition photos. Click on the photo so that it fills the page,
and then you can zoom in so close you can see the fuzzies on the thread! You
can also zoom out so it’s just a little tiny thing but I don’t understand
the value of that feature.

[lace] Ipswich Lace bobbin

2017-12-08 Thread Brian Lemin
Hello again after a long time! Smile.

I just would like to let you good folks know that despite many efforts via
the USA over the years I do not have a genuine "antique" Ipswich bobbin.

A few pictures of such a bobbin would suffice for my purposes, especially
showing the "hollow" nature of it, together with your permission to use it
in any of my academic articles.

Can anyone help please?

With special thanks to the Diana Smith collection of Antique Lace Bobbins I
have finally completed "A Dictionary of English Antique Lace Bobbins and
Lace Making Paraphernalia" and a "Collectors Guide to English Antique Lace
Bobbins".

I have a few feelers out there to get help to publish these documents on the
Internet. I will let you know when , (if) they get published.

Have a happy time over the celebrations of this time of the year.

I think two Ipswich, Massachusetts lace pillow entries are mixed here. Jeri
wrote about her very interesting pillow under Ipswich style pillow. Under

in the Smithsonian Museum collection in Washington, DC, USA. You can find

By clicking on the title of the Ipswich lace pillow entry, several pictures

[lace] RE: Christmas Lace

2017-12-08 Thread Jane

Oh dear. Should I admit to this? But I'm making an effort not to lurk .

I've just cleared away my pillows, bags of bobbins, tins of threads,
books, designs and everything else as my lace work table is needed for
the annual Christmas jigsaw puzzle fest!

I've still got one pillow out, but its nothing to do with Christmas,
just an old pattern that's taking forever and I'm beginning to
thoroughly dislike :-( . So I probably won't get much lace done over
the next few weeks.

Hope others manage better :-)

Seasons Greetings from a frosty New Forest,

[lace] Re: Ipswich Pillow Article - permission to share

2017-12-08 Thread Jeri Ames
Dear Jill,

All will join me in wishing you a speedy recovery.  Please be up and dancing
around your lace pillow before the holiday partying starts.

It is well-known, that I will share what I write and publish with Arachne.
This does not pose a problem to the newsletter editor of the New England
Lace Group so long as I am the one who approves.  Both Devon and Nancy are
members of this group, per the membership list.

I deny requests when I feel someone in another guild should be writing their
own content for their members.  An example would be my article about OIDFA in
Slovenia which you, as web mistress, made available to all on NELG's home page
under the Articles category.

The NELG is promoted all the time on Arachne, and it is by sharing that others
may be influenced to join.

Most of my book reviews on the NELG web site first appeared on Arachne, were
polished up a bit, a picture added, and then were published in a prettier
format in the newsletter.  I very much appreciate that you, as web mistress,
have made these available to all who access Book Reviews on the home page of
www.nelg.us

[lace] Please Share Lace Experiences and Questions

2017-12-08 Thread Jeri Ames

We all know lace experts who keep secrets.  That is not my ethic, or how I
wish to be remembered.

The greatest gift we could receive this holiday season is to be reading
something silent Arachne subscribers have to share about lace.

Please.  There is a need for the types of lace information you and I share.
I do not care who republishes my words, so long as they do not change
anything or cut content I felt was necessary at the time of writing.

Please.  Here is a private challenge to all:  I have given you examples -
for 22 years - of what some people would like to know and are not getting from
other sources.  It does not require great intellect.  I dropped out of
university after completing 2 years of business-oriented courses - nights.
If I can do this, so can many of our members who have more academic
qualifications and career credentials.

Please.  It is not fair for just a few of us to be shouldering the
responsibility of bringing lace art and history to 21st Century lace makers
via a free source.  Everyone has to start somewhere, and as you write (or
ask) more and more, you will gain confidence.  Sometimes, I must accept
corrections.  That is OK.  We all learn from them.

Please.  You might discover you like to write, and can build on that skill in
other aspects of your life.  I write as if I were talking directly to one of
you, and try to imagine what you might feel needs to be clearer.  I remember
you are from different nations and have different lace backgrounds.  Surely,
you would not pass by an opportunity to personally talk with a Jean Leader
(Scotland), a Alex Stillwell (England), a Devon Thein (U.S.), a Ilska Thompson
(Germany)?  Note they are listed alphabetically, and if more names were added
to the list, they would be, as well.

Not to exclude others, but do you remember when Susan Hottle bravely began
posting questions?  There is no such thing as a dumb lace question.  Susan
has enhanced our appreciation of lace, and she has learned a lot from replies.
Now, she is setting up library lace exhibits that educate others.

You can do this.

Being politically correct there, but "Holiday" covers all the celebrations.
Last night I posted my design on the
Bobbin Lace Makers Facebook page but if you do not subscribe to that one, you
can see the pattern on my website at http://www.jblace.com/ I made a
triptych piece of lace to go around a candle. I had intended to make two of
them for my Arachne exchange but while making the first one I decided it was
way too much work, so I scaled down to separate designs from the triptych.

Happy Holidays,
