Re: [lace] wool replacement

2018-09-02 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Hi Sue

If looking at wool yarn I reckon that a general rule of thumb is:
I ply cobweb = 14-15 w/cm
2 ply lace = 9-10 w/cm
3 ply baby = 8 w/cm
4 ply/fingering = 7 w/cm
DK = 6 w/cm
Aran = 5 w/cm

I have measured DMC Natura as 2S/8S - 5 w/cm which would equate with Aran
weight knitting yarn, BUT
on looking at the DMC website, Ravelry and various sources I see that Natura
cotton comes in three different thicknesses, which certainly wasn’t made
clear to me when I received the original sample to measure.

DMC Natura Just Cotton = 4 ply weight. 2.5mm-3.5mm needles = 27 sts/34 rows
= 10cm x 10cm
DMC Natura Medium (and Natura Denim) = DK-Aran. 4.0mm-5.0mm needles, 18sts/24
rows = 10cm x 10cm
DMC Natura XL = Super Chunky. 6.0-7.0 needles, 12sts/17 rows = 10cm x 10cm

I can’t now be certain!! but it’s likely that I measured DMC Natura
Medium. Available in a range of colours, a few UK sources are:

Re: [lace] brainstorming about color

I think a light-ish yellow or light-ish green, a somewhat lighter version
of crocus leaves. Not too intense yellow or green, so the background
doesn't overwhelm the lace, but not so light either that it blends with the
paler part of the periwinkle.

I think either yellow or green would make it look very floral. Are you
planning to do a piece of lace with a floral design? The periwinkle is very
pretty!

Re: [lace] wool replacement

2018-09-02 Thread N.A. Neff
Sue,

What kind of texture do you want the finished item to have? Soft and a
little fuzzy perhaps, or with crisp distinct stitches? I ask because if you
want the latter, you might be happier with a harder yarn such as one used
for weaving. Search on something like "cotton yarn weaving UK". For
example, my search turned up a place in the UK that sells weaving cottons
(e.g.
http://airedaleyarns.co.uk/index.php/yarns-fibres-for/weaving/double-top-dk-cotton-skeins.html),
in several different sizes, at least two of which have various colors and
sound heavy enough for your purposes.

If you find two or three weaving yarn websites that look promising, I'll
bet they all would send you six inches of each of the sizes they carry so
you could evaluate coverage of your plastic canvas. In general, I'll bet
they would be happy to answer questions about the tightness of the twist,
number of plies, etc. of the different yarns.

Just some thoughts, HTH.

The Sulky blendables are very nice threads for lacemaking. It produces quite
soft, matte lace. Periwinkles would look nice on cream, for a subtle contrast
or yellows/ oranges if you really want to make it stand out!

Hi, In the US we have lots of sources for cotton yarn in all different
weights - sport, DK, sock, etc. and an incredible range of colors.
Knitpicks is one source. I'd suggest searching for Cotton Yarn and the
weight you want. Or maybe Cotton Thread and the weight.

I make lots of cotton scarves and have been doing some freeform crochet in
cotton in a myriad of colors!

[lace] wool replacement

2018-09-02 Thread Sue
Hi Arachnids
My bobbin lace items for now are up to date for now and once we are back from
our golden wedding anniversary celebrations and holiday and then I have a
couple of items I want to make with the plastic canvas but cant use wool or
similar fibres and it makes me cough and choke too much. Can anyone in the UK
tell me of a thick cotton fibre which could be used instead please for 7 or 10
holes per inch canvas that will come in reasonable colours for christmas
pieces red, blue, white etc. I have no idea what I might even search for. We
are very short of knitting wool/fibre shops close to home that I could ask the
questions from so I hope someone amongst you will be able to advise me please.
I have lots of cotton crochet threads and bobbin lace threads that are just
fine but this is rather thick. I did several a couple of years ago in aran
thickness so it needs to be able to fill the spaces in.

Working on some tatting just at present

[lace] EyesghtHi

2018-09-02 Thread Alex Stillwell
Hi Arachnids

My specialist also said that close work does not harm the eyes. Although it
may make you more short sighted it will help to maintain your vision. However,
he added an important point that has not been mentioned.

Following on from advice about looking out of the window for a few moments
regularly he mentioned that if you develop a headache across the base of your
skull, while doing close work, it may be that you should stop making lace
until the headache has gone away, and then go back to it.

Have fun and look after your eyes

There still was some 200/2 to be had at the end of last century. I bought a bit
of it from Anna Kjems at Lorenzens Gaard. Martina Wolter-Kampmann, who measures
and catalogues thread somewhat similar to Brenda Paternoster, must have gotten
some, too, because in her book “Faden und Brief” it is listed with the same
thickness as egyptian cotton 170/2.

I never used it because I never felt I had the proper project to use it on.
Also: I have no clue how much it is lengthwise and I’m afraid it’s not enough
for an extensive piece of lace. I’d send it to one of you talented ladies
researching and reconstructing lace, if you would have it.
