[lace] Torchon Uplifted

2019-04-02 Thread Jocelyn Froese
Hi Susan,
For basics I’m thinking some sparkly metallic threads or beads may have some
appeal since we taught basics to a group of eight adults recently. They found
half stitch to be a bit challenging until someone mentioned Chantilly lace is
based on that very stitch. Someone started singing the song Chantilly Lace and
they all started singing it! We were encouraged, Jocelyn in Winnipeg, Canada

That looks like a stand that would work. An easy way to keep count of the pairs

[lace] Colour Coding

2017-09-14 Thread Jocelyn Froese
So I looked up ghost pillow and nothing surfaced. Is this term in any
instruction book? Perhaps a photo would be helpful.
I do colour codes on an enlarged diagram of the pricking on my pillow. This
seems to help. It's only for the tricky parts, esp when there's a forest of
many pins and best not to undo rows of finished work. Does anyone else do this?
Thanks,

[lace] Lace at the Olympics Rio Closing Ceremony Full Link

2016-08-25 Thread Jocelyn Froese
Greetings,
I'm resending the Rio lacemakers, attaching the full link in case anyone
had trouble. Finally back at the computer instead of using my phone.

http://olympics.cbc.ca/video/vod/olympic-games-primetime-aug-pre-show-and-closing-ceremony.html

You may be asked to activate Adobe Flash (allow now). It connects for one
time if you don't normally use it for video. Press X on right top corner to
close extra windows in front of the main screen. Go to full screen,
optional. Slide the timeline over to around 2:20:28 to see the lacemaker
walk towards the bolster. The lace segment is about half way through the
program. It's worth the trouble to view this.

Wondering if the Sochi lace is still online somewhere. Perhaps lace will
show up at yet another Olympic ceremony!

Re: [lace] working with a bolster pillow

2016-08-02 Thread Jocelyn Froese
Hi Sylvie,
We have been told when using a bolster, the bobbins need have alot of thread
wound around each one, gravity is a factor and threads tend to slip more with
minimum thread.
A bobbin winder would also help to achieve better tension than winding by hand.
A double hitch would be a good idea especially if the thread is slippery. Hope
this helps, I do love working on a bolster.

Re: [lace] blocking silk scarf

2016-01-25 Thread Jocelyn Froese
Hi Jane, and all

I seem to get into the most trouble when I use my mobile phone, (post
trimming) which now has the Lace Archive symbol added for quick access. A
nice idea for people on the move. My new additional email address is also
exclusive for Arachne, embroidery newsletters, Nordic Needle, Pinterest,
and other incoming. I can see on my phone which Inbox of the three (shared,
business, personal) has unread mail. Gmail was free for the two added
emails, so had much appeal. If I hold my phone sideways, then I can review
archives nicely with the larger font size. The four digit code unlocks the
phone, and I don't need to type in any other access codes or addresses for
mail. Hooray.

Regarding my silk thread question mid January I think this answer below may
best relate to the importance of testing threads before committing time to
a large project and also cost. I often think about thread size and
appearance, but don't often think about cleaning. After all, thread
companies should do testing of threads, right? My question to my friend
with the ruined project after washing was whether she indeed used Orvus
(with neutral ph and biodegradable) If so, it seems as if water alone can
cause a problem. In her case, I found out her threads lost their sheen!!

Silk is chosen for its softness and drape, blocking might not enhance that
and water can cause it to lose some of its sheen. What I forgot to mention
before is that silk is weaker when wet (again the opposite of cotton and
linen) and should be treated gently in a wet state, not stretched out as
this may cause fibres to break.

Good to hear you are travelling on the prairies! Our lace group meets on

Also, there's a bit on immigration at the Manitoba Museum, what people

The new Human Rights museum is open located at the Forks downtown. The
Forks is a national historic site, shops, antiques. See Websites, travel
brochures. Thrift shops often have threads, various antique lace: Value
Village, etc.
Folklorama is over, two weeks with 45 pavilions represent many countries.
Lots of lace, food, shows nightly, displays. Belgium, Slovenia, Italy,
Russia, etc. etc. see website for another time!

[lace] Bobbin Lace in Movies

2015-06-24 Thread Jocelyn Froese
You may have noticed lace in some of the movies you have watched over the
years. We could start a list of movies to watch that feature lace and there
may be a list already in Arachne. One title that comes to mind is
Shakespeare in Love. Other movies also show lace in costumes.

I had not seen bobbin lace actually being made in a movie until I saw Demi
Moore making bobbin lace on a bolster/pillow in The Scarlet Letter, 1995.
There are some photos (36) from the film on IMDB, an insert lace is shown,
some narrow edgings and a collar, etc. The exciting part was watching as
she worked on lace (which was frowned upon). The film itself did not rate
well; the lacemaking is near the beginning.

[lace] Prickings

2015-06-08 Thread Jocelyn Froese
Reply all:

We were told to use it because the black dots can transfer ink if using
home based ink jet printers. So the plastic is used to protect the dots.
I'm assuming laser dots are colour fast? Also the plastic cover keeps the
pricking holes from getting larger or losing accuracy due placing pins
somewhere near the actual dot. Plus if we are into saving and not wasting
etc. we can use the same pricking many times.

May all your dreams be in colour!

Re: [lace] Pronkrol

2015-05-13 Thread Jocelyn Froese
I found a table runner today, 13 x 70 inches, navy colour with a dark leafy
fabric and plain dark edges around the whole thing, mitred at the corners.
I could even tuck in the ends of the lace if I made small openings in the
dark edge?! That might save some work. The most time consuming would be to
stitch down the lace, so a person should likely do that before assembling
the backing. Plus it would hide the anchoring stitches if they go to the
back of the fabric. The lace runner would look nice on the table with rows
of lace samples on display. I better get started...

Hi Susan,
Here's a follow up. I linked my previous photo to our Northern Lights
Lacemakers blog and added two close up photos this morning.

I love the idea of making a pronkrol and these sample board photos from a
previous Lace Day are only to show the lace. Of course, the lengths would
all have to be stitched down on a cloth roll.

Now I realize what one purpose might have been, to show samples so people
could choose a certain type of lace and then place an order? Many thanks to
the Kloskant teachers for posting every week.

Hi,
At our Lace Day in 2010 my friend Anne put all her lace edgings on a solid
board for display. At first I thought that was a type of pronkrol, but
fabric covering the ends is a good way to assemble the samples and a roll
would be easy to transport. A nice idea! Here is a photo of the lace
edgings, next to the bolster. It would be wonderful to see all the
edgings/insertions assembled someday!
