A City and Guilds lacemaker is offering Goth hand-made lace gloves with an
opening bid required of £250. Don't think she stands any chance of selling
them, even though, as she says, they took 80 hours of work, are ridiculously
 expensive and totally exclusive.

Very brave to base her price on hours spent in making them, but don't think
that will persuade anyone to buy - they'll just see the price. We all know
you can't make a living out of lacemaking unless you get a very special
 commission.

 Jesus knows:

A burglar broke into a house one night.

He shined his flashlight around looking for valuables when a
 voice in the dark said:
  'Jesus knows you're here.'

He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and
 froze.

When he heard nothing more, after a bit, he shook his head and
 continued.

Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the
wires, clear as a bell he heard:

  'Jesus is watching you.'

Freaked out, he shined is light around frantically, looking for
 the source of the voice.

Finally, in the corner of the room his flashlight beam came to
 rest on a parrot.

'Did you say that?' he hissed at the parrot.

'Yep', the parrot confessed, then squawked,

'I'm just trying to warn you that he is watching you.'

The burglar relaxed. 'Warn me, huh?

Who in the world are you?'

  'Moses,' replied the bird.

  'Moses?' the burglar laughed.

'What kind of people would name a bird Moses?'

'The kind of people that would name a Rottweiler Jesus.'

Plaquettes ou plioirs , there are a few 'items' that have slots and a small
hole in the bars between the slots. These items are 'rigid heddles' for hand
weaving tape strips (similar to the twill tape we might use today).
I saw one being used at Jamestown, Virginia, USA. Since they did not
 have
zippers, etc. their clothing was held together using tapes or draw strings. I
showed an interest while watching the park's costumed recreator was
demonstrating and she even let me use the one she was using, showing me
exactly how to use it. After I had made a few inches of the tape, she
carefully cut the finished piece off and gave it to me. I was surprised at
this but it made a very memorable souvenir of my visit.
When I returned home and described the process to family my dear brother
made one for me as a Christmas gift not as fancy as the ones pictured but very
effective. The one I used at the park and the one my brother recreated have a
longer handle than those pictured and do not have the decorative carving. I
must confess I haven't made much tape but I do treasure the experience at
Jamestown, VA and my brother's thoughtfulness.
If anyone is interested in how it works, let me know and I am not a
 weaver
but will try to describe the process.

Hi

there are two books about La guipure du Puy . here's one on amazon
http://www.amazon.fr/Guipure-du-Puy-Mick-Fouriscot/dp/2841671550
now of course you know that Mick Fouriscot isn't a lace maker and is the
editor of the book .

guipure has no ground , only head and foot.
it is usually made of silk ... and silk is known to disintegrate with
age ,especially if it has been submitted to light .I remember seeing a
19th century dress made of Chantilly lace that couldn't be renovated for
that reason .

looks to be Bedfordshire - I won't say Beds-Maltese because it's not
geometrical enough.

The second one

http://www.tat-man.net/bobbinburg/BLgallery/Rescued_Beds_scallop_lace.jpg

is Le Puy.

I have several bits of plaited black BL in my collection. Some time ago I
spent a lot of time with Pat Earnshaw's and other books to properly ID them,
and tI have listed all but the narrowest piece as Le Puy; partly because of the
black colour partly because of the distinctive trails and sometimes lots of
leaf shaped tallies and mainly because of the elaborate plaited grounds ie
Guipure. In style they are all not dissimilar to your piece.

According to Earnshaw a lot of black 'Le Puy' was made in France in the second half of the 19th century, and a lot of Le Puy/Clunytype of plaited laces were also made in England at the same time, some indistinguishable from the French.

The lace school at Le Puy re-opened in the 1970s under Mick Fouriscot and I
believe they teach a variety of styles of BL. There are a number of pattern
books co-written by various people with Mme Fouriscot for various types of BL.

Subject: [lace] Google Books expired copyrights

Can anyone comment on the potential copyright liability of sites
like the University of Arizona's weaving archive (which includes the
big lace archive) in view of Google's recent attempt to settle with
publishers for sole rights to expired copyrights? I know this isn't
final yet, but they are putting tremendous resources behind it and
have a good chance of success. What will happen to sites like this
one if this happens? Will they have to shut down? Are there any
lawyers out there who are following this?
I know I'd like to scan a few old works for my own site, but have no
idea of the potential impact here. Thanks.

Does anyone have any recommendations for how many times thicker than

Re: [lace] Gimp vs Ground

Hi Clay

had to look for the english explanation . just didn't have the
vocabulary any longer ...

*
Organsin*: the organzine is a silk thread composed of two or several
strands in which each strand has received a first twist from right to
left (500-700 T/M.) and the thread another double twist from left to
right (475-600 T/M).

*Grenadine*: the grenadine is a double or multi organzine raised to a
very high twist.

Sue and others,

I meant only that majordomo is not as user-friendly as some of the
newer programs. But it does work! It just has some difficulty dealing
with HTML, certain codes, and very polite subscription requests from
Tamara. ;-P I don't think updating it would be feasible. Arachne is
hosted at Panix.com, where Liz works (last time I was in touch with
her), so it's basically free. Majordomo is the list software and it is
robust and reliable. It's been years since I can recall the list ever
going down for any reason. I would say that as long as there's a human
(me) who can sort out subscription difficulties, there's no reason to
change. Liz doesn't want to be involved on a day-to-day level with
Arachne at the moment and I don't mind the little time it takes to
keep an eye on things because I'm connected to a computer almost all
my waking hours anyway. So the current arrangement seems to be
working.

The bigger list hosts, like Yahoo Groups, offer more whistles and
bells but you would really be opening the floodgates. The list would
balloon in size overnight. As someone pointed out, it could be
switched to a moderated list, but that's a lot more work for the
moderators (I would need help because I'm off-line during Jewish
holidays) and it makes the list a bit anemic when you have to wait a
few hours for your message to appear. One of the reasons that this
list has, in my opinion, kept its original flavour so well and
remained such a helpful and civil list is because it's off the beaten
path. It's a little harder to find and it spreads mostly by word of
mouth, so it attracts very few trolls and flamers. Honestly, I think
it's better to leave the list as it is, unless Panix.com starts to
have really serious problems.

Best wishes,

Avital

Antje González wrote:

Hello all Arachneans,

I have just returned from my holidays, and I would like to tell you
some lacey information of my trip to France, as I had the opportunity
to visit Bayeux, to see its museum and to chat with an important
lacer: Mylene Salvador.

For those not very familiar with French lace: Bayeux is located in the
NW of France, in Normandy. Apart from Bayeux, bobbin lace is made in
Caen and Courselles de Mer, very near to Bayeux.

At this moment, I am trying to learn how to make tulle ground lace.
So, this visit was very interesting for me. IN Caen and Courselles I
didn't manage to see any lace. But as I knew in advance that there was
a lace workshop/museum in Bayeux, I went there directly to see it. As
soon as I entered, I was enchanted: a medium size room where beautiful
lace was shown in vertical and horizontal showcases, well organized
and classified, with the names of the style over them. Very
instructive, really. There were also three lace makers making lace,
with their round and flat pillows on a stand. They worked with very
fine thread and with the typical Bayeux bobbins (wooden, a bit fatter
at the bottom, and long (approx. 11 cm).

I was fortunate that Mylene Salvador, the founder of this place
(Conservatoire de la Dentelle) could speak Spanish. I am glad to say
that she was extremely nice to me. She explained me everything that I
asked her without any hesitation. I bought some patterns she sold (the
easy ones) and wrote notes on how to make them, because she explained
it very clearly.

I must admit I didn't know much about these tulle laces before, and
after this visit and Mylene`s explanations, I can tell the differences
among laces from Bayeux, Caen and Courselles. At least in theory!

Apart from tulle laces, Mylene had a collection of beautifully Cluny
laces, with the leaves in colour (leaves made with 5 bobbins). In this
Conservatoire they show the lace, demonstrate and also teach how to
make it. Mylene is also a designer. She made beautiful jewels in lace.

In this Conservatoire they try to preserve old laces, redrawing the
patterns of old pieces, but at the same time, creating new pieces of
art. At the same time, they teach different types of lace (especially
tulle and cluny).

The Conservatoire has its own web page. Here is the address if you
want to have a look at it: http://dentelledebayeux.free.fr/index.htm

I would like to thank Margot Walker for the report on the visit to
Normandy a few years ago. Thanks to it I managed to see this museum.
But I must disagree in what you said about the lacers not being nice.
I think the main problem was they didn't speak any English. That made
them seem a bit serious. I could speak to the others, just with signs.
But as I have just said, Mylene was very very nice, informative and
helpful.

I hope you have found this information interesting. Many greetings
from Antje, in Guadalajara, Spain
