[lace] Bolster Pillow Bobbin Management

2022-10-16 Thread LacySuzette
Thank you Janice for describing yet another management idea! I did finish my
sample swatch & posted it to Flickr Photostream. Sadly, my enthusiasm for
using my bolster for this project is waning so I think my next step will be to
test this pattern on a roller pillow to see if that helps. Frankly, it’s too
big a project & it won’t be any fun if I’m struggling with threads &
equipment. I did work “groups” of bobbins & set up a line of divider pins
along the edge, an arrangement that sounds similar to your pearl lineup. It
worked, but was very slow going. Maybe I’m expecting too much? Maybe I
can’t successfully manage more than 5 pairs (Idrija narrow tape)? A roller
pillow comparison test should help me find out whether this is a three month
or a three year project! In the meantime, I’m sorry about all the knots.
Between my mistakes & trying to use up odds & ends of perle 5, stuff happened.
I made the swatch as a mat so it might be useable for something. Sincerely,
Susan, South Florida

Oh I can picture it ! Would work well IF I didn’t have curious cats but I
do!! My ribbon with beaded pins and divider pins is literally the reverse and
locks the bobbins down! A combination of the two would possibly work for
me…

[lace] lace] Bolster pillow Bobbin management

2022-10-15 Thread Janice Blair
Susan,I have not used a bolster pillow but many of my friends do. What they
made was a strip of ribbon with large pearl beads sewn on, or a crochet strip,
similar to what some use to hold bobbins when packing up the pillow, but at
regular close intervals they attached a large round bead. The strips go around
the outer edges of the bolster and as you work through the bobbins, the used
ones are placed behind the beads out of the way. It is easy to lift them back
up when you need them again. Wish I had a photo to show you, hard to explain
in words. Looks pretty on the pillow.
I have also seen wire that is coiled, similar to the old telephone cords we
used to have on the kitchen wall phone, and fastened around the sides of the
bolster and you place the thread leads over a coil. Love the Christmas

I use ribbon (cloth) and long divider pins and long pins with good sized Pearl
tips. I once had a bolster pillow knocked of the refrigerator by my cat! The
lace wasn’t salvageable! Now it is so well locked down when I put it away
you can turn it upside down and shake it without anything moving! You learn to
secure EVERYTHING!

Many thanks to all who wrote—Clearly experience speaks volumes!! I
must say I would never have thought of using a wire wrapped dowel or rubber
bands. I truly appreciate your advice on the weekend especially as I was
hoping to make progress before Monday. There are definitely “groups” that
can be worked while others “rest” although I found it a bit of a challenge
unless the working threads are overly long. After considering all your
suggestions, combined with what I have on hand in our tiny condo, I decided to
try the “tuning fork” bobbin holders I bought at a Flanders
class—ironically from Annick! I did use divider pins plus one flat holder
but the elastic is fiddly to use without a flat pillow. All I can say is my
hat is off to anyone who manages lots of bobbins on a bolster! This might be
something I need to see/learn in person? So far my Rube Goldberg set up is
slightly faster than before. But—Anna—you have hit the nail on the head.
This might be easier on a different pillow. I do have a wide roller pillow
that I could try before I embark on making/buying a block pillow. I posted a
photo on Flickr & yes I realize it looks like something MacGyver would make!
;-) I also posted a pic of another small Binche ornament from “Christmas by
Kumiko”. They are in Photostream. Thanks again & enjoy what’s left of your
weekend! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, South Florid

[lace] Bolster pillow bobbin management

2022-10-08 Thread lacysuzette
Hello All! Yesterday I started a test swatch for Annick Staes butterfly scarf.
Since I don’t own a block pillow, I’m working on my bolster—18” long X
7” diameter. This is the pillow I use for Idrija & I’ve never had a
problem managing my bobbins. I just throw them to the side & over the back or
hang them on a pin at the side of my work. Unfortunately my swatch has more
than 40 pairs! Needless to say they have been fighting amongst themselves &
gotten quite tangled. :-( Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal
with this? I looked online & only found YouTube videos on how to make the
pillow itself. Frankly I can’t imagine making a 48” scarf without
improving my bobbin management. I’ll still be working on it next year! Many
thanks if you can help. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, South Florida
