do you have a power drill? mine is a little $10 one from Walmart and you
can use it to wind bobbins by putting the bobbin in the space where the
drill bit goes. i got a larger one but it is harder because it is a bit
too powerful. the little rechargeable one does a nice job and isn't too
bulky. sorry, i forgot about this one. i only have these three. if you
want photos or such, let me know as i will gladly share.

if you go on eBay and search for bobbin winders, there is a guy in Utah who
lists a small wooden one that is a dream for about $15. i have purchased
two - one for me and one for a friend.

the other one i have is Plexiglas and is made by a guy in Australia. Holly
Van Sciver used to carry his as well but not sure she still does. it is
even smaller and very rugged.

if you need more info, let me know and i will help research and get more
details. these are the two i have had for 16 years.

There is a wonderful winder made in Germany. It is made of wood and there
is a power-pack that plugs in. For those of us in the US, the maker
supplies the power pack for our AA batteries. It is very lightweight, takes
very little space when storing or packing, and best of all is very quiet, so
you can wind while watching TV!

I know that Holly carries this, but you might want to check Snowgoose as
well to compare cost as well as shipping!

Has anyone tried to put the newnham jaws onto an electric motor with
foot controlled variable speed? Maybe using the motor from a toy sewing
machine? I envisage the jaw would be upright so that gravity aids in
holding the bobbin centred.
If it has been done, would love to find out more - design plans,.
photos, tips.

[lace] Bobbin winders

2009-06-22 Thread Jean Nathan
I've seen the pocket winder, and like all winders which hold the bobbin in a
groove and turn it, I wouldn't use it with painted, carved or fancy bobbins
of any kind because the rubbing of the groove on the bobbin could damage
them.

I find the Newnham winder works Ok with spangled bobbins if you fold the
spangle so that it's behind the bobbin shaft in the winder. I also find
that putting a rubber band (not too tightly) around the jaws when winding
spangled bobbins makes it less likely that the bobbin will swing out of the
jaws.

I do not own the pocket winder that some have written about.  I have seen it,
though not in action, but I understand it does not wind all types of bobbins.
Maybe someone who has one can tell us about what bobbins it will not hold.

I have a couple of winders and I have to place my Midlands in them carefully
as they are not designed to hold the spangles.  I manage to use them though.
Will this pocket winder hold the Continental and International squares?  It
would be nice to know these facts before spending so much money.  I tend to
wind by hand these days unless I am really loading up the bobbins.

I have this winder, and the optional continental adapter. The basic winder
is meant for spangled bobbins. The bobbin rests in a groove with the rubber
band going around the bobbin and a wheel turned by a crank. The crank moves
the rubber band and the rubber band twists the bobbin within the groove.
Cylindrical bobbins, like most Midlands, work very well. And since the winder
doesn't grab the bobbin by its bottom, there's no problem with the spangle. I
wouldn't do Midlands that have beaded wire around the shaft. And continental
bobbins have too much shaping to sit in the groove and be turned.

The adapter has a groove of the same depth, but very short so only a very short
length of the bobbin sits in it. Many continental bobbins will work, but not
all. I've only used Swiss continentals, which work just fine; Dutch, which
don't work because there's too much turning and not enough plain cylinder; and
internationals, which sometimes work but generally not very well because of the
square. I believe the various Belgian bobbins would work well, with a
cylindrical shaft with a bulge only at the bottom.

There may be a number of people who would like to see these

unless you send them privately to one person at a time, they won't get

Hello, Miriam!

I also had the Lego Winder instructions, and was sure my son's lego stash would
give up the parts... but there was one which I just couldn't find.

There are lists on the internet for Lego enthusiasts, and evidently there are
many who are very serious about collecting the old sets. (I'm glad I saved my
son's... he and his son are now enjoying them!) At any rate, if you look at
some of those sites, you'll see that some offer old parts. If you're REALLY
wanting to find that part, it may be there...
