revolve around us! The sooner we (as a collective) get that into our media

with a whole host of other problems that our 'current world standing' has

Re: [LU] Qatar

2010-12-03 Thread matt
Good job Saudi Arabia didn't bid then.

I'm fairly open minded on Qatar as a bidder. They will clearly make concessions
on their fairly strict muslim beliefs of the Qataris (not that many of them).
I know a few ex pats who live there and alcohol isn't a problem
(getting/drinking). Nor is a normal way of life.

Without getting too deep islam is a 1430 year old religion which is developing
fast, and if you consider where Christianity was in the year 1430 then you can
see both parallels in extremists and progress being made.

I have no doubt the world cup there will be amazing and to be honest korea
japan and usa all had it in the very recent past and australia is a non starter
for timing reasons (for lucrative tv markets unless they play at night).

Indeed Russia's bid was excellent and will be a good world cup. Moscow and st
petersberg are amazing cities, sochi and kazan are quite nice places too. The
whole legacy/regeneration thing won us the olympics so we can't dismiss it when
it suits.

The real problem is that 22 (allegedly)corrupt people headed by the most
corrupt (allegedly)of all have the power. We naively believed because we had
the best bid we deserved to win it. Things are much fairer in britain!

Our media p1ssed them off and they have had a good laugh stitching us up. I
only hope our media doesn't now lose interest and pursues them to the bitter
end until Blatter and his legacy is in ruins and hopefully he ends his time in
jail!

[LU] World Cup Decision comment

2010-12-03 Thread Rick Duniec
http://www.playthegame.org/news/detailed/globalising-football-protecting-fifas-top-leaders-5063.html

FIFA's top has chosen hosts that match its own dubious business practices, but
it may be too early for them to rejoice.

Comment by Jens Sejer Andersen, International Director of Play the Game

With the double choice of Russia and Qatar as hosts for the World Cups 2018 and
2022, FIFA has killed two birds with one stone. They have shown the world that
they take the globalisation of football seriously by choosing two geographical
regions that have never come close to organising a World Cup before. And they
have chosen two countries in which FIFA ExCo members can continue their dubious
management practices at a very low risk of being disturbed by questions from a
critical press or obnoxious politicians.

For FIFA's top 22, the choices today were in logical accordance with their
aggressive denial of the well-documented allegations of massive bribery brought
forward by BBC Panorama last Monday - a progamme that added to the ill
reputation FIFA had already acquired after the Sunday Times revealed two FIFA
exco members' readiness to sell their votes. When you compare the exclusion of
the two light-weight FIFA politicians Adamu and Temarii - who were merely
asking for money - with FIFA's refusal of acting against the four heavy-weight
leaders Teixeira, Léoz, Hayatou and Warner - who in different ways actually
took big sums of money - it becomes evident that FIFA's declared zero tolerance
against corruption can be declared of zero value.

Blatter's dilemma is clear: If he tries to topple the latter four most greedy
FIFA leaders, who constitute his own political basis, he will fall by the same
axe that he swings over their heads.

Moreover, the choice of Russia with its fame for opaque corporate and public
sectors may make some of the creative men at FIFA's top fantasize about new
profitable business arrangements. In contrast, the youngest remaining ExCo
member, Michel Platini (55), has called for the formation of an anti-corruption
sports police because he realizes that football leaders cannot combat the
organized crime that is digging its way into football. I could not help
noticing his body language and facial expression on TV when the choice of
Russia was about to be announced. He looked like a man who was weighed down by
insurmountable future challenges.

The choice of Qatar must have pleased Blatter in particular. Not only because
it was moving to see the very emotional and surprised reaction of the Qatari
delegation when the nation's name appeared from Blatter's envelope, as if these
people who at home belongs to a spoiled and untouchable elite, in this football
context experienced a genuine feeling of humble persons coming to glory.
Blatter must also be extremely satisfied with being able to hand such a gift to
the Qatari president of Asian football, his ExCo colleague Mohammad Bin Hammam,
who once financed the FIFA President's electoral campaign and put his private
jet at Blatter's disposal, but recently threatened to run against Blatter in
next year's elections. Blatter's boat will not rock in the desert sand.

Many things may point to a future in which FIFA's denial and corruption
practices can continue unchanged. But it is too early for FIFA leaders to
breathe a sigh of relief.

The decision by FIFA to combine two World Cup bid procedures has been lamented
by FIFA itself for other reasons, but it does open up a quite new and
interesting political situation: We are now entering a very long time span
until the next World Cup decision is to be taken, a time span in which
sceptical government leaders and national federations do not need to constantly
flatter the FIFA top and preserve it from criticism.

Losing countries like the USA, Australia, UK, Holland, Belgium and perhaps also
Spain and Portugal may not go out immediately with furious comments about a bid
procedure that has proved unworthy and untrustworthy. But soon leading
politicians now face the impossible task of explaining to their taxpayers and
voters why they have thrown tens of millions of dollars and euros away in a
game that was anything but professional, open and fair. Likewise, in all
countries that render strong public subsidies to sport, a growing number
politicians may demand football to get its own house in order.

Noteworthy is the growing concern shown by politicians in Switzerland who are
not delighted to realize that the exemptions that sports organisations enjoy in
the anti-corruption legislation, are in fact exploited for all the wrong
reasons. Tightened anti-corruption laws in the home country of 50 sports would
constitute a major step ahead, although a few organisations might then seek
asylum elsewhere.

While Russia and Qatar have the right to celebrate for some time, a much larger
number of countries will enter into a mood of sombre reflection, fully aware

If rumours are to be believed, and in the light of little cold hard fact maybe
it's as close as we'll get, then given that only 3 of the 22 FIFA reps

He surely *must* have said something along those lines; otherwise wouldn't

of offending either Associated or NI, he has far too much integrity and

The only way we'd have got this World Cup would have been by giving millions
to our favourite FIFA judges. Their whole system is corrupt, and their
particular status in Switzerland means they're not accountable.

For me, the best punishment all those countries with good technical bids
could give FIFA is by pulling out of these two world cups. Lose the big name
countries that people want to see and it all falls apart. There's room for a
different, more transparent organisation. Remember, the only people who
really make money from the WC are FIFA, who sell the rights for many, many
millions...

[LU] Non LU - More on World Cup

2010-12-03 Thread John Sykes
I hope I don't sound as though I am bragging about my careerI simply
mention this for one good reason - I know how media works, be it here in
Canada on elsewhere. I was in radio news as a writer/broadcaster before I
thankfully, moved into the sports side.
I had the displeasure of breaking the thalidomide tragedy in, I believe,
1963. I was deep into news reaearch in other areas, including government
mis-management etc.

Question - Can any of you confirm that the BBC News team is left-leaning...
meaning, virtually supporting another to do with Labour. Reason I ask this
is because in Canada, the CBC, like BBC, is publicly ownednot a private
enterprise. The CBC is left-leaning to the extremeanything it can do to
embarrass the Tory government, or non-Labour legislatures in the provinces,
it will also.

I found it despicable that the BBC would release any story like it did prior
to the World Cup announcements. That certainly sank any hope there was for
England to get 2018. Yes, I realize many of you couldn't care less about
the national team or anything to do with the World Cup...or anything to
do with that corrupt organization called FIFA. Hells bells, you've got the
Summer Olympics in 2012same hate surely goes toward the IOC.

If no one else, ITV, SKY or whatever was going to air with the story of
corruption, then why did BBC have to do it when they did.

Just as I mentioned a few days ago, I'm one person who can love more than
one sport...similarly, I happen to love more than one football team.
Leeds United AND England..and even Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland...
and Ireland.

Left leaning? don't make me laugh. Are you suggesting that England not
getting the WC was some sort of socialist plot hatched in a Trotskyist
underground cell and gleefully executed by the BBC fellow travellers(*)?

They may be publicly funded (another scam involving tax payers funding the
elite) but they are commercially and professionally astute and they showed
their programme at truely the maximum impact time - not a whiff of sour
grapes as been before the fact either. Weren't you in the business?

(*) Stalin - Beria, how are our plans to capture the WC coming along
Beria - Our infiltration of Harrow and Cambridge means we have the BBC

In terms of its timing, we only obtained the list of these payments
last month after a secret out-of-court settlement was reached in June
2010 year. That followed an investigation into the ISL bribes by a Swiss
magistrate and concluded with unnamed Fifa officials paying back £3.5
million.

It has taken many weeks to ensure that the allegations we are making
were properly tested and that all those named were given a fair
opportunity to respond.

There have also been calls for us to put the programme out after the
vote on the bid. I understand why people feel strongly about us not
tipping the chances against England's 2018 bid.

But surely it's right for the British public to be informed about the
nature of Fifa and its demands before we win - if we do?

Once you had no idea what the interviewers personal opinion was, but you did
know what the person being interviewed opinions were.
Now it is the complete opposite.
They hector and bully the people they interview and you are only used on a
programme if you 'contribute' to the guiding directors opinion. If not you are
edited out.
They are out to make points. But it's their points. Part of the 'group think'.
Single handed the BBC has cheapened journalism. There is no longer freedom of
expression.
There is a monopoly on opinions. And the BBC was in the vanguard.
To add insult to injury they vilify those who don't share their opinion and
glorify their own and their actions.
As an ex pat I am deeply ashamed of this transformation from something that
was something to be proud of.

That's why it's the most trusted news organisation in the world. I'm not
saying they're perfect but they do strive for fair and balanced reporting,
including when they're pitching themselves against their own government.

Why should they not show it? Give me a reason.

Anyway, just watching the highlights of the cricket - love how haddin and
ponting have got their knickers in a twist. They don't like it up em mum!

 BBC and free press?
 You have to be joking.
They are an agenda ridden bunch of hypocrites.
They fit the news to their agenda.
Before you all get your knickers in a twist I am quoting a BBC reporter that
 interviewed me.
The UK was sold out. If the angle had shown PC causes in a wrong light it
 would have been buried.
 Trust me.

I'm with Sean. We have a free press. What the anti BBC people are saying is
we should 'get on board' with corruption and just tow the line. That's not
what our democracy is about. If we lost the world cup because we refused to
submit to a corrupt cabal then so be it. As mark says, let's form our own
world championship and see which one people want to see. Giving it to
Russia over us is an injustice. Giving it to fcking Qatar over, say,
America or Australia, is a joke.

Anyway, who cares? Leeds is all that *really* matters.

Why is he embarrassing the club?

He is absolutely right - there was no reason whatsoever the BBC had to
broadcast that episode of Panarama next week. It would have made no
difference to their free press rights, they are OUR corporation and
in this instance should have been responsible, and not just try and
create a fuss 2 days before the vote.

 Fucking stupid.
