This happened in a game my team played during the week.
The keeper took a goalkick, tried to play it across the box, but scuffed
it. The ball was trickling along, obviously never going to get out of the
box, and so a defender came in and picked the ball up and rolled it back to
the keeper. (Don't
Why are you surprised ? It was a handball --no?

I agree with you - retake goal kick. I think that if the ball hadn't left the
area it is still dead ball.

Indirect free kick to the opposition from where the kick was taken for failing
to execute a legal goal kick (must leave area).
Defending team must still be ten yards away, or as closer than ten yards, must
be behind goal line.
The BIBOTL will no doubt correct us.

You just got the opinion of one, although I haven't been accredited since 2004.

It's definitely NOT an indirect freekick. The penalty for failing to
correctly complete a goalkick is a simple retake, I'm sure of that. the
question is whether the handball overrides that.

Good result , poor performance especially second half. An average Ipswich team
played us off the park second half.
Diouf motm for his first half performance. Thought all our midfield were poor

I said after his brace against Town that rather than take that into the next
few games and go on a run we more than likely will now see a baron run of 5/6
games without a goal. Well that's 2 and to be honest it needs someone to gift
him with a goal or a pen for him to score. Surely a

from my reading it seemed the ball hadn't stopped moving, so kick wasn't
illegal yet and the defender committed a handball in the area - Penalty

It was. And like a morgue at the start of the 2nd half (an atmosphere that
seemed to affect the team as well).
Still - my young 'un thought it was a massive crowd and that the atmosphere
was electric(!). I won't dispel his naive notions...

Well another 3 points and 4 wins in the last 5 games. A rare clean sheet as
well. So those of us who went have to be happy I suppose. The sparse, sub
20k, crowd and the paltry turn out from Ipswich made it all a very low key
affair and it is hard to be too over enthusiastic about it. Having said
Question is: does the ball HAVE to leave the box? if it does its a retake,
if it doesnt its a handball and a penalty. Here is some reading I found
online:
- The kick can be taken from anywhere in the goal area (the small box)
and is not in play until it has left the penalty area (the big
