I figure once they receive tons of msgs of "yes, your post was read", they
will turn it off.

I tried Thunderbird a couple of years ago and hated it. Their web
browser,
Firefox, was good until it kept crashing all the time so I removed it as
well.
I get the "receipt requested" e-mails, sigh heavily and answer. I wish
people would not ask, though. My sister sends stuff to me from work and
her messages ask all the time. It is possible to continue anyway, but
if you open the message again, you get the request again. (I do not use
Outlook
I found it and turned it off in my old version of Outlook. Sorry to be a
pain in the rear, but as was said it's also a way for spammers to find live
email addresses. I have enough problems with my computer as it is and don't
need any help to make it any slower.

receipt is requested, as well as never send a read receipt. I never see
these notices. Don't know about Microsoft Outlook.

I have always assumed most of these folk were required in business, to run the
receipt, and forget it is running in the background. It seems to come up about
2-3 times a year, and is self monitored. Some newbies may see the message to
someone else, and turn theirs off in advance. And when the se
