I have just discovered a census image with a couple who have been married for 3 years. In the family is a 4-year-old adopted son whose surname is the same as the wife's maiden name. it appears likely that the wife had this child out of wedlock (although he may have been a brother's child etc.)

I missed one point in your e-mail (about adding an unknown spouse). What I put in my original e-mail would be done for the assumed adoptive father. (In other words, while the wife/adopting-husband are in focus.) You would also add an unknown husband to the woman. (different people do different

Howland,     Under Reports Books is the Ancestor report which will place all   ancestors in numerical order beginning with the current generation that you have chosen, and going back as far as you specify.  The first missing sequencial number is the one for your unknown ancestor. Gene A

When I do an Ancestor Book Report, the screen for Include does not allow me to choose what to include. For example, I may wish to include certain events, or all; or perhaps I do not wish to include General notes or Research Notes. I do not see that it allows me to choose. I must overlooking
