Joanne and Ian,

That's what TNG is all about! Basically, you simply upload your gedcom and
you're in business. Yes, you need to make a couple decisions then, but TNG
has some great tutorials that will take you through it. And you can choose
from about 15 templates to get the look you want. Should you ever wish to
customize the template, there are many ways to do so, or you can easily
find someone on the TNG Users group or TNG Forum who will do it for you for

Re: [LegacyUG] (no subject)

2017-07-25 Thread Cathy Pinner

Jensine,

You use Tools - Manual Merge.
Make a backup before you start.
It looks more complicated than it is but it's best to be able to revert
to a backup and start again when you're learning a new feature.

Don't forget to click the Help buttons on the screens.
It's easiest to have the person you want to keep highlighted on Family
View before going to Tools - Manual Merge.
Then you choose one of the others as the person on the right, check the
information on each tab and choose which parts you want - on the main
screen by radio buttons (and you can also click on the black squares
next to the field names and choose an action if you want to keep the
information from both sides) but on the others you have the choice to
copy data over.

You may be presented with other surrounding family members when you
merge two people.

Re: [LegacyUG] File Name Issue - Conflicted Copy

2017-07-25 Thread Cathy Pinner

Bill,
In addition to what Leon has said, if you've been adding data to this
conflicted copy, you could search in it for people modified after the
date you probably started using it and tag and export that tag group to
a new Legacy file then import that into the file you've accepted as the
base.

In the Detailed Search
Individual - modified date - after - date you specify
Then do an Intellishare merge.
You could merge all the conflicted databases but it's a lengthy job
which can be shortened considerably by only merging those whose data
has/may have changed.

Unless you have really fast internet and you are patient and make sure
Dropbox has finished syncing before opening Legacy, keeping your working
data in the cloud isn't a good idea.
Look at the Dropbox icon in the System tray to see if Dropbox has
finished syncing. It should have a green tick and when you hover over
it, it pops up "Up to date"

I save my backups to Dropbox. I only have one computer but recently set
up a friend to use two by putting the working data files onto a thumb
drive so that has to be moved from one computer to the other. So far
that's working much better than his attempts to use Dropbox which
invariably ended up with conflicted copies.

I would not delete any files yet.

Do you have a backup of your database before this took place? If so, I
would restore that or start using that database.

If not, you will probably just have to open the last non-conflicted
database and then do a File, Save As, and give it a new name - I like
to use a name and date as part of the file name, e.g.,
Bill_Hoff_Family_25July17.fdb.

You may have lost some work when this all took place, so you will want
to check areas that your were working on to see if the data is what
you expect. I would make sure the renamed database seems to be ok
before I deleted the conflicting file.

The Media files can be stored in a separate location. So they might be
on Drive C:\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media\. Normally, your
database is stored at: C:\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\

If you have moved your data to DropBox, I would recommend a similar
folder structure:

\DropBox\Legacy Family Tree\Data\ &

\DropBox\Legacy Family Tree\Media\

You will need to created those DropBox subfolders.

Here is the techie stuff as to why you had conflicting files:

1. Legacy runs on a single computer and their database is not network
concurrent record change compatible.

2. To have multiple computers (users) accessing a file (database) at
the same time, there has to be several rules implemented that lock out
other users while one user is changing a record in the database — you
cannot have multiple people changing the same database record
concurrently. Legacy does not implement such network / database rules
and I am sure never will.

Bottom line, “YOU" have to control access to your database one person
at a time. So, if you have a Laptop & Desktop, only use one of those
while having your Legacy database open. Make sure you close Legacy on
one computer before going to the other computer to open the database
and wait a few minutes until the file are synced in DropBox and all
computers. Some people say they hardly ever close Legacy — that is a
mistake in my opinion, it should be closed every time you leave your
computer for more than say 10-15 minutes.

and then do a File, Save As, and give it a new name - I like to use a name and
date as part of the file name, e.g., Bill_Hoff_Family_25July17.fdb.

You may have lost some work when this all took place, so you will want to check
areas that your were working on to see if the data is what you expect. I would
make sure the renamed database seems to be ok before I deleted the conflicting
file.

The Media files can be stored in a separate location. So they might be on
Drive C:\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media\. Normally, your database is
stored at: C:\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\

If you have moved your data to DropBox, I would recommend a similar folder
structure:
\DropBox\Legacy Family Tree\Data\&
\DropBox\Legacy Family Tree\Media\

You will need to created those DropBox subfolders.

Here is the techie stuff as to why you had conflicting files:
1. Legacy runs on a single computer and their database is not network
concurrent record change compatible.
2. To have multiple computers (users) accessing a file (database) at the same
time, there has to be several rules implemented that lock out other users while
one user is changing a record in the database — you cannot have multiple people
changing the same database record concurrently. Legacy does not implement such
network / database rules and I am sure never will.

Bottom line, “YOU" have to control access to your database one person at a
time. So, if you have a Laptop & Desktop, only use one of those while having
your Legacy database open. Make sure you close Legacy on one computer before
going to the other computer to open the database and wait a few minutes until
the file are synced in DropBox and all computers. Some people say they hardly
ever close Legacy — that is a mistake in my opinion, it should be closed every
time you leave your computer for more than say 10-15 minutes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Share vs event

2017-07-25 Thread Dennis Birke
I use the shared event function primarily when recording census listings. I
track census listings primarily to identify who was then in the household. The
shared event function allows you to mark all household members at one time,
rather than creating an individual event for each household member.

I’m curious to see how other people use that functionality.

What are the pros and cons of using the share function for events vs using a
separate event of each thing for each person.

I remember that there were thoughts about each method.

Re: [LegacyUG] File Name Issue - Conflicted Copy

2017-07-25 Thread Leon Chapman
Looks like you may have had the file open using two computers at the same time
using DropBox or some cloud storage.
If so, the cardinal RULE is: Use only one computer at a time to work on your
cloud stored database.

So, if you have your file open on one computer, be sure to completely exit
Legacy before opening the file on another computer. You also need to allow
some time for the database file to sync with the cloud and all computers.
Normal a few minutes, but depends on the cloud service and your internet speed.
With Dropbox, you normal see a file sync notification in upper right of
screen. Other cloud services may not be as user friendly or sync as fast a
DropBox.

[LegacyUG] File Name Issue - Conflicted Copy

2017-07-25 Thread Bill Hoff
Greetings,

I see that my legacy file for some unknown reason to me, the following now
appears as an insert to the fdb and media file name .

   (DESKTOP-H9R2TCG's Conflicted copy 2017-06-15)

What have I done, and how do I correct this? All seems to be working fine
using this file, but I've done something wrong as I certainly did not add
the questioned inserted statement to the file name.

Bill
