Re: [LegacyUG] Sharing Master Source and Source detail with other individuals and events

2019-08-05 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ian,

If your Basic source citation is a good format there is absolutely no
need to redo it.
Moving to SourceWriter sources is a long and painful process if you have
lots of sources.
I still have some Basic sources to redo but only because they were done
poorly at the time years and years ago.

The SourceWriter is useful to give you a better citation and more idea
of what you should be recording but it's still just an aid to good
sourcing which can be done in Basic style though it's more difficult to
be consistent in Basic.

Remember that all SourceWriter sources are converted to Basic style in a
Gedcom. That's normally fine for the templates I use but for some it
doesn't work so well. So consider your output and check.

Thanks Cathy,

I am watching the Source writer webinar at the moment, so will play with
your method later this pm.

Normally I would add the source to everyone at the same time, when
entering

data, but I am doing a clean up at the moment, so re doing some old
citations first, before I move over to the Source Writer from the Basic
format.

Ian,

Are you using the Source Clipboard? Once the source is on the
clipboard with

the detail you want, you can apply it to whoever you want, whichever filed
you want. I leave Prompt for Detail checked to make sure I'm applying the
right detail and right Master source. But I don't have to refill it. I
just

use it. I consider the extra click worthwhile for accuracy.

If I've used another source in between then I need to go to the Assigned
Sources page for someone I did use that Master Source and Source
Detail and
copy that source with it's detail to the Source Clipboard again so I
can use

it again (see copy icon lower left).

Alternatively, if I realise I will be using that Master Source AND the
source detail again but want to use another source right now, I can Save
both Master Source and Detail to the list of 10 quick access sources.
However, I normally save clipboard without the detail to that list. When
you've saved a Source there (and it doesn't matter if the Master Source is
Basic or SourceWriter, you can load it onto the clipboard either using the
Load button or right click on the Source Clipboard triangle and choose the
one you need.

Yes, but I thought the idea was to have one Master source - eg: A
Church marriage from the same Church, but different details for each
couple.
Works fine for each set of couples, but not when I want to attach one
to each of the named parents!

Similar with one Master Source for the New Zealand Birth Register -
with hundreds of individuals and different details for each one but
cannot attach to their parents who are referenced on the register.

Same for a census with up to 12 members in the same family recorded on
the same page.

Thanks for your solution, I had not seen the copy icon before, as I did not
have the Assigned Sources screen in full screen mode. Worked perfectly.

I will gradually convert my old Basic Sources to Source Writer as I update and
add individuals to my tree. 
