My previous comment #9 is wrong.
Since I made it I have done another test with a 3rd document XLOG07 which I
opened on 2015-11-5 before 21:04 and edited multiple times

After the changes in comment 12, changing save recovery timeout to 2 minutes
and checking always create backup copy a XLOG07.bak file appears in the
libreoffice backup
