comment 81 removes the OOo code that enabled comment resizing on insert. So it
is a good code pointer, but needs to be re-worked as per comment 30.

In no way is comment 81 expected to fix this bug report. I only included the
number because of the close affiliation with OP's report.

I, as one of the earlier submitters would agree that is a good course of
action. This used to work properly until a change committed in version
4.1.0.4-release. And though, as earlier poster stated, it may only seem to be
one extra step, but if you have to work with calc sheets with comments a lot
(like I do), those extra steps require you to stop what you're doing an use the
work-around, which shouldn't have to be done and we didn't have to do in
OpenOffice or the earlier LibreOffice versions.

Got it. As it stands today, I would leave it as-is, which means that I don't
think it should have been a bug issue until after all ability to resize the
comments box was removed. Now that it is back to its original state I don't
view it as a bug. BTW, to edit a comment in Excel takes only one fewer
keystroke. Personally, don't don't consider it to be a bug at this point, more
of a (very minor) preference for the way things should work. Agree that it is
not worth the time and effort…as long as the current functionality does not
disappear.

@larrybradley: As someone that's been following this thread since 2013, let me
summarize the issue. The problem was to edit the size of the comment boxes was
extremely clunky because you had to select 'Show Comment' in order to get the
resizing boxes to appear. *Then*, an edit was made that removed *ALL* ability
to resize the comments box. *Now*, we've come full circle and are back to the
original issue. The debate seems to be, whether to say if it's too risky and
time consuming to fix a bad UI issue since the problem that broke the
functionality entirely have been resolved. But, as far as what the ticket is
about, we've come fill circle to the original issue that led to this beg
report. Aka, we're back where we started.

Frankly, now I am not sure what the original bug report was. However, assuming
that it was the "inability to resize a comment," I agree that the bug has been
fixed because it is now possible to resize the comment box. Clunky, but
possible. Agree that this bug report should be closed.

WontFix does not mean the bug is not valid.
But
Since the bug has been reported the situation has changed due to the fix of bug
114956 and the need to be able to resize a comment while editing is now less
strong than it was.
and
According the comments #30 and #67 from Armin Le Grand whose advice about the
code should be listened to, the code modifications needed to restore previous
behavior is risky and prone to weird side effects.

So I think closing this bug report as WontFix would be a prudent decision.

There is a working workflow because you can easily show all comments (*). So
you can easily resize any comment you want. With the fix of bug 114956 you see
the whole text you are typing in the comment.
According to comments #30 and #67 from Armin Le Grand, it seems it is a bad and
risky idea to go back to the previous behavior.

So closing as WontFix.

(*) you can add a shortcut for the command "Show Comments" : menu Tools >
Customize

3. (Major) When editing a comment longer than its default box, the text below

2. When mousing over a cell with a comment, the comment is displayed truncated,

Retested, macOS 10.15.5

Reproduce

* open calc
* add comment and keep writing until the writing goes beyond the space of the
default comment size

Currently

Writing continues outside of the comment box.

Expected

Comment box should grow as users keep typing their comment and the comment
exceeds the default comment box size.

With 7.0b1 I no longer see the problem, that even with View > Comments the
handles to resize an existing comment do not exist. They did show as expected
in this second test. I will watch this and send an update if they go missing
again for existing comments.

So this is indeed the behavior described in the original report and no
additional bad behavior is happening now.

If there was a change, just write exact new behavior, instead of additional
talk .

No need to make too many reports on the *same* issue of resizing comments.
New report is for different issue, not the same issue that changed behavior.

So far this is Minor severity but High importance for being regression with
many CCed users and duplicates.

If next planned version was rc1, recommend delay RC release to fix component or
regress codebase to 6.3.6 in this area. I'm fairly certain we'd get a lot of
negative feedback if this is not corrected before RC.

Confirmed, someone has mucked with this component in 7.0b1 and made it to where
comment (and other related components) resizing that was a buggy two-step
process is now *BROKEN* and not possible. Recommend increase in bug severity
level for 7.0b1. This is not technically a regression as no previous version
had this component completely non-functional. If beta developer is actually
working on this bug, please comment on it. If no one caused this on purpose,
recommend intentionally regress to 6.3.6 codebase for this component for 7.0b2

and 7.0 b1. Just ran into this using Calc and it is quite frustrating to be
unable to resize the comment then writing it and having to use the default
format which may fit some but maybe not even the majority of comments.

Interstingly, while the OP reports that the issue is limited, in 7.0b1 the
problem exists also after the comment was created or the document re-opened. I
can't find any way to resize the comment. So the issue has further regressed.

Dear Peter Draganov,

To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today,
LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed
bugs which have not been touched for over a year.

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this
bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the
details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in
getting confirmation that the bug is still present.

If you have time, please do the following:

Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice
from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information
from Help - About LibreOffice.

If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to
RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help
- About LibreOffice.

Please DO NOT

Update the version field
Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker)
Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular
meaning that is not
appropriate in this case)

If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a
REGRESSION. To do so:
1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your
bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from
http://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

2. Test your bug
3. Leave a comment with your results.
4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';
4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword

Feel free to come ask questions or to say hello in our QA chat:
https://kiwiirc.com/nextclient/irc.freenode.net/#libreoffice-qa

Thank you for helping us make LibreOffice even better for everyone!

Warm Regards,
QA Team

--- Comment #30 from Armin Le Grand (CIB) ---
As https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122142 explains it was an error to
show the handles in captions when edit was active. To change this, bigger
changes would have to be done on EditEngine (due to it painting directly and
thus uncontrolled to the edit views). Reactivating this would lead to awful
paint errors.
Problem is more that comments at cells do not behave like the rest of draw
objects: Normally pressing ESC leaves the edit mode, but keeps the object
selected, pressing RETURN re-activates TextEdit.
Thus I see more a problem in that SC immediately hides the caption when in edit
mode and pressing ESC -> this should lead to the object being selected, the
next ESC should hide it.

Confirming that this bug still exists as of version 5.1.0.3 release. Issue is
happening as described for me on Windows 10 Pro using the Windows x86_64
binary. Comment window can only be resized after you insert a comment, step
off the cell then right click "Show Comment" then you can resize the comment
field then you have to select "Hide Comment" to get it back to hover display.
This bug requires a lot of extra clicks to work around. I haven't touched C
code in 20 years so I don't think you want me mucking with anything.

Anybody know the last version that this feature still worked properly? It
might go a long way to cut down the amount of coding to fix.

So, everytime you want to resize a comment, it requires two extra steps (Show
Comment, then close comment) unless you want the comment to remain on the
screen, which most people do not. Not cool. (In reply to tommy27 from comment

Bug still exists.
When you right click on the cell with the comment and select view comment then
you can resize it. But in an older version you could resize the comment while
editing it. This is way more comfortable and you would expect it to work that
way. If I hadn't searched for it in bugzilla I would never thought of the
option to view the comment and then to resize it.
Please change that back so you can resize a comment while editing.

I have discovered that in the Linux versio (have not yet tried Windows) If
you select the cell, right click and Select Show Comment from the pull
down menu, then click in the comment area the box points are displayed and
the box resized. If the points are not displayed try clicking on the
border. You can then right click on the selected cell and choose hide
comment
