Sounds like a great idea. Does that link that you provide keep out
enhancement requests, meta bugs, easy hacks, and potential easy hacks?

Best,

the link you refer is this one: http://snipurl.com/29febjl

it's just a list of NEW bugs with no new comments since 2 years
and I've not done any filtering to exclude eventual meta or easy hacks
Okay we'll need to do that as well as MStahl (and Bjoern) asked us not
to ping those bugs.

Pinging these bug reports makes sense as long as
1) it's going to save the QA team a lot of time
2) we're getting a good response from the bug reporters

I think that both UNCONFIRMED and NEW reports could benefit from this
type of follow-up ping, but the proof will be in the data.

--R

as said to Beluga, the ping message will take QA a minimal effort since
it's just an automated message we send once.

then all the real job will be done to reporters and other people on CC
that will retest and hopefully give feedback... the QA team will only have
to wait.

even if only 5% of the pinged bugs will turn into WORKSFORME it will be a
win since we will not spend anymore time try to triage again those bugs.

moreover the automated message will serve like a kind of reminder to users
to upgrade to latest LO version... it's not rare to see people still using
obsolete LibO releases (like 4.1.x or early 4.2.x) just because they don't
follow our rapid release cycle.

having people using very old LO release is detrimental since they could
keep reporting bugs that are not present anymore in the current releases.
so our ping campaign could serve as an upgrade campaign as well

the mailing list.

Beluga has some interest in some of the older groups of UNCONFIRMED
bugs, so perhaps Tommy and Beluga could chat about some ideas here,
then come back to the list or to the next QA Meeting w/a proposal.

here's a mail conversation between me and beluga on this topic.

I agree that we can ping them, but I think we should do some tasks
before that.
As you noticed, I've been going through the old ones. I'm currently at
July

2014, so not very old anymore :)
The concentration of hard-to-repro bugs is high in the older reports.
Some are

practically impossible to repro by a regular QA team member.

the rationale of pinging old bugs (which most of the time are unconfirmed
just because they are hard to reproduce) is to ask the reporter to retest
himself with a new release and see if the bug is gone or not.

nobody better than the original reported can reproduce a bug.

so the gain is that if the reported himself tell the bug is gone we will
not spend anymore time trying to reproduce an hard to reproduce the bug.

so with a minimal effort (automated ping message) we can get rid of bugs
from the list and the reported will do the job... the same thing can apply
to old NEW bugs as well

I agree with you. QA call must decide that.
regarding the multiple links you saw they are only because of different
periods of time selected (1 year, 6 months, 100 days etc etc)... again the
correct timeframe we want to ping has to be decided with the QA team.

moreover we have to decide if pinging just UNCONFIRMED old bugs or even

in recent weeks I've seen many of UNCONF and NEW old bugs turning into WFM
after retest with recent LibO releases (by me or other QA guys like beluga
