Thought I'd jump in here while things are quiet and ask if anyone knows if
it's possible to write a DOS batchfile that can be started from a Windows
icon, and not leave an open DOS

If its OK to have a .pif file associated with it, just right-click on it in
Windows explorer and select properties. In one of the tabs it'll have an
option to close the window
