Anybody remember it? I'm trying to make an IBM Travelstar GN20 20G unit work...it's fine in the desktop but not at all happy in the lib :( I have a Travelstar 20G that I just put in a Lib 60. I reported the problem about the no basic rom. I then found the archives and someone posted that installing lilo fixed that problem. Once I did that, all was great. Aha - i'm planning on putting it as a mixed boot 95 (or 98) and linux, so I can put lilo on from the desktop and work from there... I can make it do 8G on fdisk (as expected) but it won't boot, and it doesn't seem consistent...is this one that needs the famous pin 28 link? When you mean won't boot, what exactly do you mean? Sorry, was heavily jetlagged when I wrote this (I'm only mildly jetlagged now :) With the 20G in, the machine will boot from the floppy crash disk. Fdisk appears to work, reports a touch under 8.4G, lets me fdisk the drive. Rebooting (to the floppy) works, so I try and run format /s. This picks up the size correctly, runs the format, but hangs while 'calculating free disk space - this may take a while' (sectors*size*cylinders takes a while?!?) Formatting the disk on the desktop works fine, boots from there when fdisked with either a dos or linux fdisk and then formatted, but it won't boot in the libretto past the bios stage - hangs for a while then asks for a start disc. Hibernate isn't happy, either...writes at the expected speed but reads very slowly and crashes when it transfers control back. The bios is 6.4 - I think I'll try an upgrade to 6.5 and see what happens... No bios? A boot disk doesn't boot? Floopy boot disk works fine... I'm really happy with this drive, though the partitioning is annoying. Not a problem, as I said it's going to be a dual boot machine. I also have a 50CT with a 20GN (well, a 20Gb IBM drive which fits, so I assume it's the same model). I had no trouble in installing and fdisk'ing, formatting the drive etc. What I did was _not_ put it in a desktop, but instead used a DOS boot floppy and ran fdisk in there to fdisk the first 8Gb (and you don't have to leave a space at the end for the hibernation, as the bios has hidden it from DOS), and then use a Linux boot floppy (ouch, don't ask right now, I'm working on fixing it for the 2.4 kernel I am using now) and fdisk the rest of the drive. Of course, make a ~40Mb partition between the two for the hibernation data. Once LILO was installed, everything was fine and happy (although this is a single-boot Linux machine not a dual boot). One problem you might have is that the kernel for LILO will have to be within the first part of the disk (under 8Gb, maybe less), otherwise the BIOS calls which LILO makes won't work to load the kernel. Hibernate isn't happy, either...writes at the expected speed but reads very slowly and crashes when it transfers control back. Hibernate is also ok for me, having used the above method. I'd guess that it is reading very slowly because it is not finding the data it is expecting - ie. disk is partitioned to use the hibernation area as usable disk space. I'd have thought that this is because partitioning in a desktop machine would _not_ hide the necessary part of the disk from DOS and so ensure that the space is available for hibernation. The bios is 6.4 - I think I'll try an upgrade to 6.5 and see what happens... I haven't upgraded the bios on my 50, I was going to do that (maybe) if things didn't work, but they seem fine, so the original bios should be ok. Of course, make a ~40Mb partition between the two for the hibernation data. This was plan (a) - the theory being to format the first 8G for windows and the rest for linux (so the bios leaves space) Formatting on the desktop shows a size of 2400 cylinders (ish) which is about right for 1024 cylinders in the first 8G, so when I fdisked from a linux rescue disk I zapped everything up to 1020 as dos, everything after 1028 as linux (in an extended partition). Fdisk in windows (back on the lib) then complains that the partition info is corrupt (though it reads in the desktop) which I suspect is because the numbers in there don't match what the bios can handle...hence the need for lilo or grub as a boot handler. Hmmm maybe I should hunt a mini-linux installation and try and build a lilo from there? Once LILO was installed, everything was fine and happy (although this is a single-boot Linux machine not a dual boot). One problem you might have is that the kernel for LILO will have to be within the first part of the disk (under 8Gb, maybe less), otherwise the BIOS calls which LILO makes won't work to load the kernel. I think the latest lilos cope with more than cylinder 1024 now, grub certainly does... Hibernate isn't happy, either...writes at the expected speed but reads very slowly and crashes when it transfers control back. Hibernate is also ok for me, having used the above method. I'd have thought that this is because partitioning in a desktop machine would _not_ hide the necessary part of the disk from DOS and so ensure that the space is available for hibernation. No, I left space...but even if I hadn't, the system would dump the data sector by sector, doesn't look at the file structures. I haven't upgraded the bios on my 50, I was going to do that (maybe) if things didn't work, but they seem fine, so the original bios should be ok. I'll try the lilo route. Re: CT50 and 20G drives
Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 09:58:09 -0700 (PDT) From: David Chien [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: CT50 and 20G drives As talked about in another thread (search Libretto Mailing List archives), there are problems installing and running a 8GB HD in any Libretto L110 or older. The BIOS does not natively support correct LBA mapping of 8GB HDs, and as such, you have to use one of the options. 1) Install and use a disk manager program like Ontrack.com's or www.storage.ibm.com's (latter only if you have an IBM HD). This will resolve the problems and let you install anything you want. Caveat! Nobody has tested and confirmed 100% sure that the hibernation area is then correctly located at the end of the full HD, rather than at the end of the 8.4GB boundary. (Will someone test and report back how they found out?) 2) Install and use Linux or Win2K, both of which bypass the BIOS and read the HD geometry directly. With Linux, as posted earlier, two users have tested and posted their results. The hibernation partition sits at the end of the 8.4GB (or thereabouts), so you will need to create at least two partitions below and above that area, leaving about 100-400MB of that area empty in case you don't know the exact size of the hibernation space. (the Linux program posted in a prior article can tell you - it'll blank out the space and find out where the changes caused by hiberation data saved start and end) With Win2K, prior users say it simply sees it all, but again, not one of those users have tested 100% to make sure the hibernation partition is at the end of the HD space rather than at the 8.4GB boundary ontop of their data. (will someone test this and let us know?) -- Naturally, one of the easiest ways to check under DOS where the hibernation partition is is to blank out the HD, hibernate the machine, then use a disk sector editor to walk the HD sectors until you see changes. In any case, good luck and let us know how it goes! d =) = adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!?
