Re: HDC Error SpinRite

BTW, I ran a utility on the old drive about 1 week before it failed called 'SpinRite 5.0. It is a program that subjects the drive to worst-case read/write scenarios over about an 8 hour timeframe in an attempt to find any weakness before they might become a problem. Kind of like Norton Disk Doctor or Scandisk on steroids. I am wondering if anyone out there has ever heard of SpinRite damaging older (or any) hard disks? When I attempt to reset the machine, it stays on the Toshiba bootup screen image for a long time, then I get an error message that says: HDC Error Insert system disk Press any key to continue... And it won't continue booting. I assume HDC stands for 'Hard Disk Controller'? It does Anyone have any ideas to fix it? I had exactly the same on a Libretto 110. Mine would boot to a DOS prompt from a floppy, and that was it. Toshiba replaced the HDD under warranty. As I understand it, a faulty HDC will produce exactly the same symptoms and requires motherboard replacement. Sincerely... Lately I have been experiencing an intermittent problem with a 6GB 8.45mm drive in my L100 running Win98. The machine will sit there, accessing the HDD slowly. Like read, pause, read, pause, read, pause... for a minute or two, and finally either a blue screen error announcing "unable to write to drive C: data or files may hah! ) be lost, or else it will simply reboot. Once when trying to restart immediately opon boot I saw a black screen with the ominous pronouncement "HDC error" I have run the most throrough scandisk possible, and sometimes it finds and fixes errors, sometimes it reports no errors. Any ideas? You think the Hard Disk controller is flaky or is maybe the HDD itself going? It's a typical sign of HDD going bad. Backup immediately and get a new HDD(or your old one). I have a retired 4GB HDD which I may try for a while. IF the HDD is bad, does anyone know which brand drives are silent? My current one seems to park the head after every write and it is most annoying. Clickety-tick, clickety-tick. I always thought the Toshiba 810MB original L50 drives were smooth and silent. I would obviously prefer it to be the replaceable thing ( HDD ) as opposed to the motherboard, thus reducing the unit to the resale value of the display! I did a backup last night as soon as I reached the same hopeful conclusion as you did. I think is was successful. Thanks Pres Waterman W2PW c/o Patchogue Motors, Inc. Is that the case or do I have a different problem that replacing the drive wouldn't fix? I've just been there with my 110 (and I've still not quite got back yet). Could be your HDD, or the HDC. New HDD for the former, new motherboard for the latter, apparently. In my case it was the HDD - replaced (eventually) under warranty. Does the BIOS now deny all knowledge of your HDD? Can you boot to a DOS prompt from the floppy drive, C: being created as a RAMdrive??
