[OCLUG-Tech] April Meeting: 2018-04-05 @ 19:00

2018-03-30 Thread Scott Murphy
Location: We will be at Algonquin this month, room T-111. For those who have
not noticed, we are back to the first Thursday of the month.

REMINDER: If you are not planning on attending the April meeting in person,
sending a proxy as described in the previous mailing list post would be nice to
have, otherwise we have to keep doing this until we are successful. Rather than
see how determined we are to complete the elections, please help us get this
annual piece of corporate business completed in a timely manner.

This is our AGM and election of board members. At this point, we have enough
candidates for an election, however we still have to go through the
announcement of the slate to the membership and accept any nominations from the
floor.

Following the AGM, we will have the official launch of the new website and
branding. After that, we will have a discussion on why should we use Linux and
a discussion on what is desirable in user interfaces.

There will be a one hour pre-meeting item from 18:00 to 19:00 for people who
are new to Linux, have general questions, or wish to help out with people who
are just getting started.

After the meeting, there may be an optional social event at one of the nearby
pubs or restaurants. A short discussion and vote as to location will be taken
then.

After the talks, there will be the opportunity for a GPG key signing. This is a
monthly offering, just look for Scott after the talk and we can go from there.
Bring some kind of photo ID and some keyslips if you expect people to sign your
key. If you need some method of creating pages of keyslips, there is an online
slip generator available at http://openpgp.quelltextlich.at/slip.html

Note: New speakers welcome. If you have a topic or know someone who may have a
good topic for a meeting, feel free to suggest it to the board.

[OCLUG-Tech] Final reminder of the 2018 AGM

2018-03-29 Thread Scott Murphy
---
The April talk announcement will go out this weekend in a separate
mailing. This announcement is being sent to ensure we get sufficient
members or proxies to have our AGM. This message will be repeated a
couple of days prior to the AGM.
---

The April meeting starts with our AGM as required by the corporation bylaws.

At present, we have the following candidates for the board:
- Bruce Davis
- Ian Gorman
- Kelly Kendrick
- Scott Murphy
- John Nash
- Tug Williams

If anyone else is interested in being on the board, feel free to self-
nominate no later than April 3rd, 2018. If several people are willing to
come on board, a few of us are willing to withdraw our intent in order to
get some new blood in. Just so everyone is aware, four board members is
sufficient, six would be better in case of circumstances requiring an
existing member to step down.

In addition, according to the bylaws of the non-profit corporation, we
require at least 20 members people to be present, either in person or via
proxy. We will have a sign-up sheet for the election and will require all
present to sign in order to prove the election was held in compliance with
the bylaws. If we do not have the requisite number of people/proxies, we
are required to repeat this at every future meeting until we do meet the
criteria. If you are not going to be there, please register a proxy. To
meet the member criteria, our official member roster is this mailing list.

Proxies can be registered by sending an email to either John Nash (john dot
nash at uottawa dot ca) or Scott Murphy (scott dot murphy at arrow dash eye

Re: [OCLUG-Tech] does anyone still use "dump" for backups these days?

2018-02-23 Thread Scott Murphy
I suspect that the answer to that depends on what you are using as a backup
medium.

I have a tape robot and more tapes than I can ever possibly use, so it gets
some use. Mostly for archives. Amanda is a pain, as it wants to fill tapes, so
lots of tape changes to get as much on a tape as possible. Bacula is somewhat
better, as long as you like config files. rsync to a NAS is my usual backup
strategy and synching the NAS to another is my redundancy. The occasional dd to
an external HDD from my laptop is also a hedge against disaster.

In defence of dump, I used it relatively recently to virtualize a system that
was on old hardware and not readily accessible. Other methods I tried failed.
Restoring dump files to correctly sized virtual disks & LVMs on a new VM from a
live distro made it an easy task. I suspect I could even turn that into a short
topic talk for a future meeting if there is interest.

Re: [OCLUG-Tech] thank y'all for taking so much of that excess off my hands

2018-02-10 Thread Scott Murphy
As one of the individuals who grabbed a board, thanks for sharing. I’ll also be
happy to see more of the same.

I guess I’ll have to gather all of my old stuff and bring it out to a meeting
as well. I do have a box of VOIP desk phones gathered together that I’m not
using and could be given away. I should bring them out for anyone who wants
one. Some are more complicated to set up than others, but there are lots of
instructions out there.

[OCLUG-Tech] February Meeting: 2018-02-08 @ 19:00

2018-01-25 Thread Scott Murphy
Location: Somewhat Unknown - We will be at Algonquin this month, but our room
has not yet been assigned. It will also be the SECOND Thursday, not the first.

This month we will have a talk from Peter Sjöberg on upgrading a very small ISP
and an updated talk from Scott Murphy on an ad hoc collaboration system.

There will be a one hour pre-meeting item from 18:00 to 19:00 for people who
are new to Linux, have general questions, or wish to help out with people who
are just getting started.

After the meeting, there will be a social event at one of the nearby pubs or
restaurants. A short discussion and vote as to location will be taken then.

This month we will have a single talk from Renato Carrara on SSD vs HDD. This

it.

[OCLUG-Tech] Reminder: LITW 2017 This weekend!

2017-07-12 Thread Scott Murphy
This year LITW will be held at Strathcona Park on Sunday July 16 @ 13:00
(1:00pm) rain or shine.

This is a casual, family oriented event. Bring kids, significant others,
devices, laptops, battery operated projects, or whatever suits your fancy.
Bring some food to share and a fun attitude.

The board will bring a cooler of pop/juice/water, some paper plates, utensils,
paper towels and anything else we think would be a good idea.

If you are planning on attending, please RSVP to the board with a count of how
many people you are bringing so we have an idea as to how much to bring.

Looking forward to another successful LITW and we will see you there!

Expect to see at least one more reminder email before then.

[OCLUG-Tech] LITW 2017

2017-06-27 Thread Scott Murphy

Expect to see at least one more reminder email before then.

are required to repeat this at every future meeting until we do meet the
criteria. If you are not going to be there, please register a proxy. To
meet the member criteria, our official member roster is this mailing list.

[OCLUG-Tech] January Meeting

2017-01-01 Thread Scott Murphy
We are expecting to have a meeting on Thursday, January 5, however I don’t have
a room assigned yet. I’ll be posting details tomorrow on the talk(s) and I
expect to have room details by midweek. As I understand it, we don’t get a room
until the college has assigned evening slots for student activities and classes
which will not be completed for a couple of days.

Re: [OCLUG-Tech] Watch out for external enclosure power supplies

2016-12-08 Thread Scott Murphy
I got burned (literally) with this before. I started putting brother labels on
power supplies and matching devices as a result. Luckily, I have very few of
these devices left to deal with. I ended up getting one of those devices where
you slide the drive in vertically and as long as it is a SATA drive, I’m good.
I have kept one USB to PATA for the occasion where I might have to try to read
an older drive. Cuts down on problems immensely.

Cheers,
Scott

[OCLUG-Tech] December Meeting: 2016-12-01 @ 19:00

2016-11-28 Thread Scott Murphy
Location: Woodroffe Campus, Algonquin College - Building B, Room B-185 ***NOTE
THE ROOM CHANGE***

Note: I have no idea where this room is located, so leave yourself a little
time to locate the room.

Tonight we will have two sessions, one on extracting useful date from PDFs and
the other will be a group chat on who uses Linux and what they use it for.

There will be a one hour pre-meeting item from 18:00 to 19:00 for people who
are new to Linux, have general questions, or wish to help out with people who
are just getting started.

After the meeting, there will be a social event at one of the nearby pubs or

[OCLUG-Tech] November Meeting: 2016-11-03 @ 19:00

2016-11-02 Thread Scott Murphy
Location: Woodroffe Campus, Algonquin College - Building T, Room B-242

Note: the room can be a little difficult to find, based on experiences last
month. The easiest way to find the room is to head towards the pedestrian
overpass entrance on the second floor. When you have just about reached it, the
door to B242 that is unlocked will be on the left. This is just past the
vending machines.

Tonight we will have two presentations, one on raspberry pi clusters and the
other on Portable toolkits.

are new to Linux, have general questions, or wish to help out with people who

Location: Woodroffe Campus, Algonquin College - Building B, Room B-242
NOTE: This is a different building than our previous meetings

Tonight we will have one presentation with the possibility of a second one (if
we need one). Patrick Malcolm will be giving a talk on ransomware. Given the
interest and questions from the last talk, we are only formally scheduling one
presentation this time.

There will be a one hour pre-meeting item from 18:00 to 19:00 for people who

[OCLUG-Tech] September Meeting Cancelled

2016-08-29 Thread Scott Murphy
I have not been able to obtain confirmation on the room for September as of
today, so I’m cancelling the meeting.

If you still want to get together, we could still meet up at Chances R on
Thursday. More of a social event than a regular meeting. I should have a proper
set of rooms booked for October. Last year we had a similar problem, as
Algonquin was not willing to allocate a room right at the beginning of the fall
semester.

The topic was going to be ransomware with Patrick Malcolm, so if he is willing,
we will have that in October.

[OCLUG-Tech] Open Source IEEE Standards event @uOttawa - August 8th

2016-07-27 Thread Scott Murphy
I’m passing this on for anyone who might be interested in participating. If you
are interested in participating, contact Alfredo Herrera. Contact details are
at the bottom.

-

I am helping organize an event for the IEEE Standards Association in Ottawa.
The topic will be on Open Source beyond software, notably for standards. Our
plan is to focus on use cases. We would like to invite industry and key
members of the open source community to have a discussion on this topic. This
event is part of the IEEE Standards Association outreach program, and from that
perspective we want to invite those working with standards and open source to:
•reduce development cost
•accelerate time-to-market
•mitigate vendor lock-in
•expand organizational innovation capabilities
•build community

(These are know to open source community members, but they are not obvious to
corporations, or traditional standards bodies.)

Invitation to Open Source IEEE Standards event @uOttawa - August 8th

Our draft agenda currently looks like this:
  1-1:15 Introductory remarks—Don Wright, president elect IEEE-SA
1:15-1:45 Use Case 1: Stefan Schlichting, Draeger, IEEE P11073
1:45-2:45 Panel: Open Source, Open Standards
o- Chuck Adams, Huawei (IEEE-SA CAG member)
 o- Ashutosh Dutta, AT, IEEE 5G co-chair
o- Phil Wennblom, Intel (IEEE-SA CAG member *)
o- 1-2 MORE SPEAKERS AND MODERATOR
  2:45-3 Break
3-3:45 Open Sources Licenses, Challenges and
Opportunities—Latonia Gordon, Microsoft (IEEE-SA CAG member)
3:45-4:30 Use Case 2: University of Ottawa—Alfredo Herrera
  4:30-5 Wrap-up and thank you—Don Wright

Could you share details of this event with members of your community that may
want to participate?

Thank you in advance,

This year LITW will be held at Strathcona Park on Sunday July 17 @ 13:00

This is a casual, family oriented event. Bring kids, significant others,
devices, laptops, battery operated projects, your homemade drone or whatever
suits your fancy.
