I've never tried to use DHCPCD on Linux/390. Sounds a little bizarre to me. Still, you might try using a Linux DHCPD server and see if it handles things better. If you're using an OSA in QDIO mode, virtual hipersockets in z/VM 4.2 or CTC/IUCV links, DHCP (server or client) will not work. It

I have been experimenting with linux using a 3270 console rather then the HMC console. Now the HMC console might be superior to the 3270 driver which gets initialised later, and does not show the early messages, but the 3270 console probably comes closer to the way 390 type operations are run

Mark: Thanks for your response. I've already done that. It was one of the first things I tried. I have the proxy server explicitly set in both /etc/rc.config and in the settings/proxy panel in Konquerer. Anybody else on our intranet can get to the proxy server, just not Linux/390 under VM.

You will get that message everytime you do not do a 'clean' dismount of the file systems. If, say you had the file systems mounted for the Kernal upgrade and did not dismount your file system prior to re-IPLing your image, then the file system would be in an 'open' state when it tries to mount

The silo command does not create a file, it just writes some information (including the ipl text found in ipleckd.boot out to the appropriate part of the DASD unit. None of the file names used by silo are fixed, they can be specified any way you want. The only reason I suggested doing it again
