before the insmod. I had done the mknod for /dev/ntibm0 and /dev/btibm0 ,
then shut down and rebooted linux, attached the tape and did the insmod.
When I tried to do the mknod again, it said it was already there.

Yes. You need run zipl (for the Linux 2.4 distro - zilo, silo for older).
It should work with either cdl and ldl format.
