I've created the ext3 partitioned dasd, tared the root, /boot, and

So this swapgen utility makes the V-Disk linux ready? Does that mean it's
formatted as swap? What do you do then within in the Linux guest to use
the device as swap?

Yes, it's ready for Linux use as a swap device. You just need an entry
for swap in the /etc/fstab file...

Hi,
you can use the Crypto-Cards but not the internal Crypto Co Processors.
You can do configure it at the HMC, Activation Profile, Choose at the
right side the correct LPAR and then you have at the bottom right, a
small arrow to get right. There you can activate the cryptocards.

Hi... I just want to confirm that I understand something right...
If I have a SLES7 32 bit system running, and I want to upgrade to SLES8 64
bit, I can't just go in and run Yast's System Update function. (Because
it's an architecture change.) Right? I have to install the 64 bit SLES8,
then
I would say that's a pretty safe assumption, since SUSE said that going from
SLES7 to SLES8 32-bit wasn't a supported upgrade, but a re-install.

James,
In order to use vdisks, they have to configured similar to an FBA device.
Block size must be 512. If you define the vdisk in the VM directory and run
SWAPGEN with the proper device number, you should be alright. I am no
expert, just tried it once.

the microcode fix on our system thisi weekend. But our lpar runs VM. Just thought I'd
mention checking for the HIPER.

I just hope that going from SLES8 to SLES9 will be a supported upgrade.

Unfortunately, no.

Unfortunately, no. At least it hasn't been for the SuSE 8.x to 9.x upgrades
on Intel.
Don't be so sure.
